(Т.С. Самохина, е.М. Дианова Text 3 pp.135-137).

If you are approaching the end of your university, it’s time to start job hunt. To decide what career path to follow, you should make a personal inventory and carry out market research. Firstly it’s necessary to collet your resources, focus your energy and launch an effective job-search campaign.

The success of somebody depends on the economic situations in the world, the persona qualifications of job-seeker and condition of the industry. There are different pathways leading to a gainful employment, the main thing is to find the right one for you.

The traditional pathways are help wanted ads, situation wanted ads, employment agencies and state Employment Service.

Help wanted ads are universally recognized because they provide an immediate connection between a job seeker and his potential employer. Depending on the reputation and position of the company they may place their ads almost everywhere, from highly respectable newspapers to a lamp post near metro station. The latter may promise to pay you 1000$ a month, but the fact that they don’t specify any professional background should caution you against trusting them too much.

Employment agencies in our country are often criticized and called on the carpet for their ineptness. The reason for this is that in most cases they arrange a kind of “blind date” between a potential employer and a candidate.

Many experts will tell you that most of the best jobs are not even publicly advertised. These job vacancies belong to so called hidden job market. There are 2 ways to reach this market: by networking and cold calls.

The most popular among the young people nowadays is networking. Broadly speaking it involves establishing a system of valuable connections which can bring you interesting career opportunities. Everyone has his or her personal network already, which includes: family, school contacts, business partners.

Cold calling is often used in selling to describe making the rounds of potential customers without previous appointment. Cold calling aren’t for shy people – you should be aggressive and pushy in presenting yourself, you should persuade the employer that you’re the only one for this position.

As we can see there’re a lot of opportunities for us, every door is open, it’s up to us to decide.

Have you ever tried any of the mentioned strategies? If so, were they effective?

17. One thing is to impress somebody on paper or over the telephone, but it’s another thing to impress in the flesh. A job interview is a business appointment in which everything counts in conveying a good impression.

(Т.С. Самохина, е.М. Дианова Text pp.138-140, 151-154).

To impress somebody on paper or over the telephone is not the same as to impress in the flesh. A job interview is a business appointment and the key to the interview success is mostly the advance preparation.

It’s important to find out the information about employer before you go to the job interview. Nowadays there is much publicity about operations of different companies, e.g. company’s profile on-line, published brochures, company report etc.

You should realize that the companies are different, because some people use a one-size-fits-all approach if they are applying for several jobs. So one of the most important points is the preparing an outfit that will make you look your very best. At any age, a well-fitted suit or coordinated skirt and blouse with matching accessories for females can make them look and feel more self-confident. If you want to teach, dress more conservatively. The most favorable color is black but it isn’t the most cheerful for a business interview, because it cannot draw the interest of the employer. In any cases you should avoid aggressive make-up and massive jewelry. The employer doesn’t want to see a mannequin come to life.

We all know that a good appearance engenders a feeling of self-confidence and well-being. The proper care in personal hygiene gives one person a fresh, clean feeling.

The looks alone will not help anybody get a job. Don’t regret to memorize the resume. So you have to make sure you know the dates of important events.

Another thing you can do is to go through your personal achievements to understand what you can present to an interviewer as an impressive argument in your favor. A good rest and no panic before the interview are important too.

There are a lot of books written by professional career counselors with numerous recommendations about what to say and how to project a winning image. These instructions are very subjective and often culture-biased, e.g. to make an eye contact, to avoid yes\no answers or to use your sense of humor. But every organization has its own culture, tradition, folklore and signs of difference. So you should study the interviewer because the employer usually wants to hire people in their own image. If your style matches the interviewer’s, you can establish chemistry.

The main thing during the interview is to be yourself. Of course to come to an interview in time is a must. Be energetic, initiative, don’t hesitate to smile. But don’t criticize you previous employment. Don’t chew gum during the interview. Many people feel themselves not very good by the questions about the expecting salary, don’t be shy! Don’t talk about your family, it’s private. Remember, nothing private, only business.

The company wants somebody they need and your task is to prove that this somebody is you. If you manage to show that you can do what they want you to do, you will be out of place. Your lack of experience can be compensated with your qualifications, enthusiasm, ability to learn quickly and most of all your sense of responsibility. The main thing is to change the negative into a positive.

Hopefully you will pass the interview and the job-holder will call you the next day, if he/she doesn’t call you during three days, it’s ok to call back an ask about their decision.

19. It looks you’ve almost made it! The tedious exams, endless tests, graduation scare – they will soon be in the past. What are you feeling at the moment, graduate? Free at last with the big world at your feet? Or are you feeling lost and afraid to leave the secure walls of your university? What are the most important guidelines for establishing yourself as a valuable new employee? (Т.С. Самохина, Е.М. Дианова Text pp.159-162).

It looks like we’ve already made it! The tedious exams, endless tests, graduation scare – they will soon be in the past.  The university time is considered to be the best time in life. Because we enjoyed the irresponsibility of our studenthood so much! We may not like this word but what it means is that most of decisions were made for us. Our short –time and long-time goals were very simple -pass the exam with a good grade, graduate in time. Another thing that could make us feel secure is that at university we used to be one of many. Most of the people around us were of similar age, academic ability and social background. The limited social set of likeminded people makes the atmosphere enclosed and rarified. But in the real world there’re a lot of people with different points of view. And one of the main things is the competitiveness – everywhere, and it’s something different from one of in our classroom. We have to work hard to find our place. In other words we come to realize we are on our own. And the real world has a lot of difficulties we should come through.

There’re some guidelines for establishing ourselves as a valuable new employee:

- First of all we should learn to respect people we come to work with and the organization we work for.

- Then we have to get our bearings in the organizational culture. Be a keen observer to learn how things get done in our company.

- A good worker associates with winners, not losers.

- For success we should network wisely. A key of success no matter where we work is making appropriate connections that will open doors of opportunity for us.

- We should set goals and strive to attain them. Probably we breezed through school without much personal or professional direction, but now it is time to get our priorities in place.

- It´s very important to establish a reputation as dependable and committed. The thing is that in a busy modern organization of today you can´t expect to be babied at every step. Everybody makes mistakes, but the important thing is to learn from them and constantly improve your performance. Opportunities come to those who prepare for greater responsibilities.

- We should lead a disciplined lifestyle. Lifestyle relates to physical and emotional health. As students we may have enjoyed a nonstop social life, but as a full-time employee we should show up at work well-groomed well-rested. And we shouldn´t forget that seasonal colds, allergies and other minor ailments may place us into the list of those who are frequently absent from work, letting others shoulder their responsibility.

There is a life after graduation, and it’s waiting for every ex-student who looks for it and wants it.

20. Teaching has been always considered to be the art, some kind of calling and one of the high-minded occupations. An ideal born teacher should possess a great number of peculiar traits of character which let her fulfill her occupation. And besides one can follow the stages of teaching development in accordance with the human values evaluating and changing.
