If you are approaching the end of your university, it’s time to start job hunt. To decide what career path to follow, you should make a personal inventory and carry out market research. Firstly it’s necessary to collet your resources, focus your energy and launch an effective job-search campaign.

The success of somebody depends on the economic situations in the world, the persona qualifications of job-seeker and condition of the industry. There are different pathways leading to a gainful employment, the main thing is to find the right one for you.

The traditional pathways are help wanted ads, situation wanted ads, employment agencies and state Employment Service.

Help wanted ads are universally recognized because they provide an immediate connection between a job seeker and his potential employer. Depending on the reputation and position of the company they may place their ads almost everywhere, from highly respectable newspapers to a lamp post near metro station. The latter may promise to pay you 1000$ a month, but the fact that they don’t specify any professional background should caution you against trusting them too much.

Employment agencies in our country are often criticized and called on the carpet for their ineptness. The reason for this is that in most cases they arrange a kind of “blind date” between a potential employer and a candidate.

Many experts will tell you that most of the best jobs are not even publicly advertised. These job vacancies belong to so called hidden job market. There are 2 ways to reach this market: by networking and cold calls.

The most popular among the young people nowadays is networking. Broadly speaking it involves establishing a system of valuable connections which can bring you interesting career opportunities. Everyone has his or her personal network already, which includes: family, school contacts, business partners.

Cold calling is often used in selling to describe making the rounds of potential customers without previous appointment. Cold calling aren’t for shy people – you should be aggressive and pushy in presenting yourself, you should persuade the employer that you’re the only one for this position.

As we can see there’re a lot of opportunities for us, every door is open, it’s up to us to decide.

Have you ever tried any of the mentioned strategies? If so, were they effective?

15. Psychologists say there are personality types best suited for this or that field of activity. It’s very important to be able to identify yourself as a personality type as applied to career.

(Т.С. Самохина, е.М. Дианова Text 3 pp.120-123).

One approach to the analysis of individuality is connected with personality and its traits which can be hereditary and cultivated. The other approach is associated with the motives that people pursue in their day-to-day life.

There are universal motives which are shared by most people, like: the motive to be loved, the motive to belong and the motive to be safe. These motives are demonstrated by different individuals to different extent. Power and achievement motives don’t belong to universal motives, because just a leader’s personality is driven by power motive.

Different roles help people satisfy their personal needs. And different jobs predetermine different roles. We can describe different personality types as go-getter, self-starter, over-achiever, workaholic, team-worker, clock-watcher etc. But a ty[i]pical description includes 6 personality types: authoritarian, affiliative, conformist, aggressive, co-operative and achieving.

The first one shows tendency for liking authority and exercising power. The affiliative type usually builds close relationships with others. The conformist shows tendency for thinking and acting the same as other do. The person with aggressive personality has an aggressive behavior in order to achieve aims. Cooperative person will work closely with other in performing tasks. As for achieving worker he tends towards gaining status, career success and praise.

Actually there’s no such thing as a “pure type” because people usually combine features belonging to different types. We can also change gradually from one type to another or demonstrate different features to different people in different situations. To prove the existence of personality types we can observe very young children. Most of them have a hereditary inclination to a certain personality type.

Hence it follows that the type isn’t static. It depends on various environmental and social experience and learning.

At the stage of life that we are at the moment, each of us presents a “product” of family, education, system, society and work experience. This product has its value but if somebody of us wants to become competitive on the modern job market, he should find is niche or his targ[г]et customer. All these predetermine your demand and pay.

16. It’s just fine if you have your personal job-search strategy. Though a lucky chance is what you may strongly hope for, it is not good to bank on it alone; a successful job hunt is a combination of planning, tireless persistence and faith.
