A data centre in Siberia

In 2009 we finished building a data processing centre in Novosibirsk which serves Siberia, the Ural and Eastern parts of Russia.

The data centre is connected to several fibre-optic cables offering bandwidth of more than 400 Gbps. In future it will host a «multi-backbone node» based on DWDM equipment, which uses spectral compression technology.

This will allow us to send multiple streams of information from one optical fibre, increasing bandwidth many hundreds of times over. The capacity of the Novosibirsk data centre will therefore be at least twice as great as that of other sites in Siberia, allowing us to offer subscribers new high-quality services.

A data centre in Samara

A brand new data centre in Samara, which will become the largest in Russia, was put into operation in 2010. Redundant power supply and backup climate-control systems will allow it to work offline for 48 hours, insuring our subscribers against network failures.

Construction of fiber-optic transmission systems

Rate of speed today – it is not only a competitive advantage, but also a way of life. It allows us to achieve success, to be one step ahead of the market and to constantly look into the future. The increasing speed of movement makes our planet smaller, and people closer. The data transmission rate available to us today, would be very surprising to fans of technical progress of the last century. Can you imagine how much time, effort and money it would take, for example, to move a medium-size library from Moscow to Cape Town? Today, many times larger volumes of information can be transferred in a split second from one end of the Earth to the other, using high-speed communication lines. Increasing speed requires more and more advanced technologies. "MegaFon" is actively investing in construction of its own backbone fiber-optic communication. Right now, this area is a priority for the company. The construction of the "European Grand Circle" of fiber-optic communication lines (FOCL) has become an important strategic project. In 2009, it joined the cities located in six different federal districts from Murmansk to Makhachkala into one network that extends about 5 kilometers. FOCL* today is the most promising direction for the development of transfer technology. The Siberian Branch of OJSC "MegaFon" launched into operation the most modern and efficient data center in the Ural, Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts. If necessary, the data transfer rate can be easily extended from the current 40 Gb/s to 400 Gb/s rate. That is, in every second the "MegaFon" network will be able to transfer an amount of information equivalent to 11 DVD-drives, or almost 13 thousand songs in MP3. The construction of fiber-optic communication lines is one of the most important strategic directions for "MegaFon". They allow us to provide to subscribers the maximum speed of mobile data transfer with 3G technologies. For this reason, "MegaFon" has become a leader in the 3G market in terms of revenue and number of users. We are striving to build our own FOCL that will cover the entire country, connect the most remote regions and provide high-speed capabilities to subscribers in all regions. It is our most important strategic advantage and we have no doubt that it will be a key to the success of the company in the near future. In 2008, the total length of fiber optic "MegaFon" lines was 12.12 thousand km, and in 2009, this span reached 22.23 thousand km.
