IW # 4.1 The electron microscope

1. Read and translate the text in a written form.

The principle involved in the construction of this microscope is that lenses of the light microscope are replaced by magnetic or electrostatic lenses, and an electron source has replaced the light source. All the elements of the system must be in vacuum chamber.

In contrast to the glass of an ordinary microscope, the magnetic lens of a super-microscope deflects the beam at right angles to the direction in which it is traveling, and refraction takes place in spirals. The focal length is secured by alternating the current in the magnetic field.

The beam of electrons shot from an electron gun passes through the coil of wire which acts like the first lens of the conventional light microscope. It then passes on the object, the denser parts cutting off some of the electrons, the lighter parts allowing them to pass through. It then passes through two stages of magnification by magnetic "lenses" (two coils of wire), and finally the beam strikes a luminescent screen on which the electrons become visible to the naked eye in the same way as the image of a television picture becomes visible on the screen at the end of a cathode-ray tube.
