В начале II века до н. э. последний представитель династии Маурьев был убит собственным военачальником. С этого времени начался период политической неустойчивости и постепенного распада державы.
Наконец, в IV-V вв. новый подъем начался при династии Гуптов (все правители этой династии носили имена, оканчивающиеся . -гупта). Настоящим основателем крупной державы был Самундрагупта, правивший в середине IV века.
Расцвет Гуптской державы относится ко времени правления Чандрагупты (380—415), но уже вскоре после его смерти усилилась тенденция к ее распаду. Эпоха Гуптов знаменует собой расцвет не только архитектуры, изобразительных искусств, литературы, но и театра, создание которого одна из легенд приписывает Брахме. В III-V вв. зарождается литературная драма. Величайшим драматургом этого времени был Калидаса (V в.). Его лирические и эпические поэмы являются шедеврами санскритской литературы.
В конце V— начале VI вв. Северная Индия распалась на множество мелких княжеств, в которых правили местные династии (одной из таких династий оставались и Гупты). Время падения державы Гуптов является началом новой эпохи — раннего средневековья.
