IV. Speaking skills

Ex. 9. Agree or disagree. Prove your answer:

  1. The architect of the first native Indian empire was Chandragupta Maurya.

  2. Ashoka was as warlike as his grandfather.

  3. Soon after Ashoka's death Buddhism flourished all over the country.

  4. Brahmanism forbade the slaughter of animals in sacrifices, nor were animals to be used for food.

  5. Chandragupta trusted women warriors more than men.

  6. Ashoka financed building programs and hospitals for the sick from the royal treasury.

  7. Chandragupta was the most powerful raja ever seen on Indian soil.

  8. Soon after Ashoka's death, the Mauryan Empire began to fall apart.

  9. Ashoka sent Buddhist missionaries into all the neighboring countries as he was very enthusiastic over his new view of the world.

  1. To the astonishment of the court, Ashoka never expressed any regret for his many wars and thousands of homeless refugees.

  2. Chandragupta lived in constant fear of assassination and paid spies to keep a check on possible rebels.

  3. According to chroniclers Chandragupta assembled a great army.

Ex. 10. a) Answer the following questions to see if you understand every word in the text:

  1. Who was the first emperor of the Mauryan Empire?

  2. What is known about his magnificent capital?

  3. What was the result of his concern for his own security?

  4. What field did Chandragupta seek fame in?

  5. What impression did his army make on the enemy according to the chroniclers?

  6. Was he a success in warfare?

  7. His military victories brought the emperor little rest, didn't they?

  8. Was his grandson like his father?

b) Put questions of your own to the rest of the text and ask your groupmates to answer them.

Ex. 11. State the main ideas of the text without looking into it. Make use of the following expressions from the text:

Ex. 12. Make up a plan of the text, provide each point of the plan with necessary words and word combinations. Compare and discuss your plans in the classroom.

Ex. 14. Give the gist of the text in 3-4 sentences.

Ex. 15. Role play.

Choose roles and make a dialogue. One of you argues that it was Chandragupta who played the most important role in the Mauryan Empire, another student thinks that Ashoka was the most prominent emperor.

Ex. 16. Rewrite this paragraph with the correct punctuation.
