IV. Translate into English.

1. Канун Нового года - это последний вечер старого года. Люди часто собираются там, где есть башня с большими часами, прощаются со старым годом и приветствовать приход нового года. Новый год обычно празднуют с друзьями дома или в ресторане.

2. Хэллоуин - один из любимых детских праздников. Его празднуют 31 октября. Люди надевают устрашающие костюмы привидений и маски. Дома украшены бумажными ведьмами, привидениями, черными кошками и т.д. Дети в маскарадных костюмах ходят за угощением в дома соседей.

3. Рождество - это празднование рождения Иисуса Христа 25 декабря. Многие идут в церковь в канун Рождества и утром в день Рождества. Люди поют рождественские гимны. Семьи украшают рождественскую елку и кладут под нее подарки для членов семьи и близких друзей. Подарки также кладут в носки, вывешенные у камина. Семьи обычно проводят рождественскую вечеринку с традиционным рождественским обедом. Кроме того имеется традиция посылать рождественские открытки родственникам и друзьям и давать деньги бедным.

2. get-together - an informal gathering of relatives, friends, or acquaintances for celebration and/or communication, especially after some time of not seeing each other, e.g. a family get-together, a get-together of old friends; usually, some refreshments are served.

3. birthday party - a celebration of someone's birthday, usually informal; guests bring presents; the hosts provide meals, drinks, entertainment;

4. surprise party - a party organized as a surprise; guests hide in the apartment or unexpectedly appear at the door when the person in whose honor the party is given comes back home;

5. housewarming - a party to celebrate a family's moving into a new house or apartment; guests bring presents useful for the house; the hosts offer refreshments;

6. wedding party - a party to celebrate someone's wedding; formal or informal, at home or in a restaurant, with presents, food and drink, music, dancing, short speeches and toasts;

7. wedding anniversary party - a party celebrating wedding anniversaries; some guests bring gifts based on the number of years the couple has been married, for example: the first anniversary - gifts made from paper; second - cotton; third - leather; fourth - silk; fifth - wood; tenth - tin; fifteenth - crystal; twentieth - china; twenty-fifth - silver; thirtieth - pearls; fortieth - rubies; fiftieth - gifts made of gold.

8. cocktail party - a social gathering, in which cocktails and other drinks and light refreshments are served, usually between 5 and 8 in the evening;

9. dinner party - usually a formal party; suit and tie or tuxedo for men, evening dress for women; written invitations are sent in advance and an answer to them is usually required;

10. tea party - formal or informal, usually at 4 or 5 in the afternoon, tea and light refreshments (sandwiches, cakes, etc.) are served;

11. buffet party - a party where guests help themselves to refreshments laid out on tables or buffets;

12. open house - a party during which all people who want to visit can do so without an invitation; light refreshments are usually served;

13. potluck dinner / potluck supper - a surprise meal, where nobody knows what dishes other guests will bring;

14. garden party - usually an informal party given in the garden or yard in the afternoon; refreshments, grilled meat, drinks, etc.

15. farewell party / going-away party - a party in honor of someone who is going away;

16. costume party - costume ball / masquerade party where everyone wears a masquerade costume;

17. stag party - 1. a party for men only; 2. (also, a bachelor party) a party that is given by male friends in honor of another male friend before his wedding;

18. hen party – a party for women only;
