АДВОКАТ ЗОЛОТОГО ДЬЯВОЛА
Редкое преступление вызывало столь пристальное внимание американской прессы, как убийство в 1964 году во Флориде 69-летнего банкира Жака Мосслера. Жену покойного Кэнди Мосслер и ее племянника и любовника Мела Пауэрса обвиняли в убийстве на почве финансовых интересов и адюльтера. Все улики были против них, и казалось, что электрический стул неминуем.
Но Кэнди и Мел были спасены. Главной фигурой на процессе стал адвокат из Хьюстона (штат Техас) Перси Формэн, нанятый Мосслер за умопомрачительный гонорар в 200 тысяч долларов. Процесс «Штат Флорида против Кэнди Мосслер и Мел Пауэрса» был его семьсот первым делом и семисотой победой. В числе спасенных им от электрического стула был даже человек, который, как говорят, прикончил свою жертву при дневном свете на главной улице в присутствии 43 свидетелей.
Используя юридические уловки, Формэн буквально смешал с грязью всех свидетелей обвинения. В своей заключительной речи, продолжавшейся пять часов, он орудовал цитатами из Ветхого завета, Шекспира, Уорд-сворта и Уэлса и убедил присяжных вынести оправдательный вердикт.
И вот сенсация — судебный иск предъявлен самому Формэну! Его бывшие подзащитные Мосслер и Пауэре, унаследовавшие после смерти банкира 33 миллиона долларов, утверждают, что драгоценности и земли, отданные адвокату в качестве залога за часть гонорара, поднялись в цене, и требуют возврата 65 тысяч долларов.
Но Формэна не так-то легко заставить вернуть деньги. «Если начнется процесс, то публика сможет удовлетворить свое любопытство насчет того, кто в действительности убил Жака Мосслера»,— пригрозил Формэн.
Воистину справедливы были слова окружного прокурора Герштейна, возглавлявшего обвинение во Флориде: «Я разочарован. Я не согласен с приговором. Но такова система американского правосудия!»
