Geography Latvia is located in North Eastern Europe on the Baltic Sea coast. It is one of the three Baltic States with Estonia bordering it to the north and Lithuania to the south.  Latvia also shares borders with the Russian Federation to the east and Belarus to the southeast. With an area of 64,589 sq km, Latvia has a 494km coastline on the Baltic Sea. There are 2,300 lakes in the country and 44% of the countryside is covered with forest Major Cities (and population) Riga (731,762), Daugavpils (110,379), Liepaja (86,264), Jelgava (66,136), Jurmala (55,603). Population The total population of Latvia is 2.3 million. Of this 57.7% are Latvians and 29.6% are Russians. Belarussians, Ukrainians, Poles and Lithuanians make up the remaining 12.6%. Language The official language of Latvia is Latvian, which is a Baltic language belonging to the Indo-European language group, similar only to Lithuanian. Russian is understood and spoken by a large part of the population,  but English and German are also commonplace, especially among the young. Regions Culturally and historically, Latvia is divided into four regions: Kurzeme in the west with its long beaches of white sand, Vidzeme in the north with rolling hills and picturesque landscapes, Latgale in the east with hundreds of blue lakes and Zemgale in the middle with its lush green meadows. Climate The country has a moderate climate with four distinct seasons. July is the warmest month of the year with an average temperature of +17.5°C, but it can get as warm as +30°C. Winters are snowy with an average temperature of -4.9°C, but temperatures can sometimes drop well below -20°C. Capital The capital city, Riga was founded at the mouth of the Daugava River in 1201  and since 1997 the centre of the city has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Riga is a dynamic place, the largest city in the Baltic States, constantly changing and named ‘the city of inspiration’. It is the heart and centre of Latvia and almost a third of the nation lives there. The influences of 800 years of Riga's history can be seen in an amazing variety of buildings: from unique wooden architecture to fantastic Art Nouveau buildings  and the medieval churches and castles of the Old City. You’ll find this amazing architectural heritage alongside elegant and graceful modern buildings that reflect Riga’s move into the 21st Century. The city is culturally vibrant with museums, art galleries, concert halls, theatres and clubs. It has excellent restaurants offering Latvian and international cuisine and a host of bars and cafes to suit all tastes,  making it a popular destination for short breaks and weekend visits. And should you wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, you can relax in its numerous parks or take a short trip to the countryside or the wide sandy beaches of the Baltic. Culture Latvians have kept their traditional culture alive, especially during occupation by foreign powers,  when cultural activity helped the nation to retain its identity. Its unique Song and Dance Festival is recognized by UNESCO and the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum, founded in 1924, is one of the oldest in Europe. It offers an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with Latvian history and traditions  that take place in the main city squares and participate in traditional Latvian ritual celebrations. The Annual Crafts Fair (Gadatirgus) is the biggest and liveliest of the arts and crafts fairs, held over the first weekend of June. Latvians have a strong passion for music,  which is expressed in an active concert programme with numerous festivals taking place all over the country. Summer is the high season for festivals and some of the most popular are the International Festival of Organ Music held in Riga in June, the Opera Music Festival in Sigulda, the Festival of Ancient Music in Bauska in July; Saulkrasti Jazz Festival and the rock festival «Liepajas Dzintars» held in mid-August. Most Latvian towns and cities organise ‘city celebrations’ at different times during the summer. These are lively events with music, dance, performances, sports and open-air markets  and while visiting you can see traditional craftsmen at work and are lots of fun for children and adults alike. Accommodation Accommodation is readily available with a choice of top-quality five star, business class, economy class, low budget hotels, family run hotels and private bed and breakfast facilities.  You can also choose to stay in castles and manor houses in the countryside.
