SOCIAL NATURE OF MAN

Despite the fact that man is an animal, little which has a meaningful relationship to the essential qualities of human behavior can be derived from the study of lower forms of animal life. No matter how anthropo – morphic we are in seeing human qualities in ants, bees, mice, dogs, and horses, there are extremely important differences that cannot be bridge. The behavior of lower forms of animal life is largely controlled by a series of innate reflexes and instincts, whereas man’s behavior patterns are transmitted by culture from one generation to another. Man alone among the animals possesses language with which to convey abstract meanings. He alone has the language and intelligence needed to convey highly technical ideas, such as mathematical concepts. Man alone has a self, plays a variety of social roles, and makes moral distinctions. Lower animals are not nearly as dependent on others of their kind as is man. The limitations on the possibility that animals can approach human beings in their behavior far outweigh the few similarities. Even some comparative psychologists have pointed out the fallacy of trying to derive valid knowledge about human beings from experiments on animals. Hilgard, a well-known psychologist, has summed it up as the price paid for overmuch experimentation with animals is to neglect the fact that human subjects are brighter, are able to use language – and probably learn differently because of these advances over lower animals. Only if a process demonstrable in human learning can also be demonstrated in lower animals is the comparative method useful in studying it.
