MAN’S ACHIEVEMENTS IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Man’s achievements in the area of socialrelationships have not equaled hisachievementsin physical science and technology. Within a few centuries man has solved many ofthe mysteriesof the worldaround him. His endeavors have progressed from the realmoffolklore and music tothatof science. His knowledge of the earth all its resources, andeven the vast areasof outer space? Surpassesthe wildest speculationofprimitive man, medieval philisophers, or the early American colonists. The tremendous information he has amassed hasenabled him tobuildgreat dams and irrigationprojectto prevent catastrophicfloods and droughts and open up marginal lands to cultivation. He has learned to control pestilence and many diseases so that his expected life span is greatly increased. In largeparts of the Western world, at least, modern technical skills have provided food, clothing and shelter for most of the population, and scientific today increasingly deals with such intricate problemsasnuclear fission, electronics and changes in the human cell.

Unfortunately these technologicaladvances have not brought with them a comparable degrees of conquest over man’s problems of relationships with other persons. His success in social relationships generally has not approached his progress in his physic environment. Although the physical scientists have fathomed the very structure of enegry and have produced means of travel in outer space, man has been increasingly plagued with difficulties in his personal relationship.
