When people travel they often stay at hotels. Hotels are the most popular type of accommodation in many countries. They can be small, family-owned hotels, hotels at popular resorts, business hotels, and so on.

Depending on the range of services and facilities on offer, a hotel can be classified as 1-star through to 5-star. The star rating system is the classification that is used most around the world. Other systems exist, but all of them essentially classify hotels as luxury, superior, mid-market, and economy.

There are single rooms, double rooms, twin rooms, triples, quads, suites at a hotel. Rooms in most hotels have got all modern conveniences: central heating, air conditioning, private bath, telephone, television and others.

Most hotels have got coffee bars, restaurants, beauty parlors, barber’s shops, swimming pools, saunas, gyms, special rooms for conferences and banquets. In the lobby there is a booking-office, a post office, an information desk. On every floor there is a comfortable lounge.

The larger the hotel, the greater the number of services offered. Standard hotel services are maid service, room service, dry-cleaning and laundry service, safe service, taxi service, wake-up service.

Staying at a hotel

If you want to stay at a hotel you should book a room in advance by telephone, fax or e-mail. If you do not book accommodation beforehand, you may have to leave the hotel because it is fully booked up.

Arriving at the hotel you go to the reception desk and confirm your reservation. You should fill in a registration form and tell the receptionist in advance the day and the time of your departure.

You can take a single room, a double room, a twin room, a triple, a quad, or a suite at a hotel. Rooms in most hotels have all modern conveniences: central heating, air conditioning, private bath, telephone, television and others.

You can choose full board (includes breakfast, lunch and dinner) or half board (includes breakfast and one other meal).

At the hotel you can get various services: maid service, room service, dry-cleaning and laundry service, safe service, taxi service and others.

Before leaving the hotel you have to pay your bill.

Safe service. Some hotels provide computerized safes for their guests’ documents and valuables. But it’s safer to leave your documents and valuables at the safe in the reception area, if anything happens, they are responsible.

Taxi service. Reception will order you a taxi to pick you up at the hotel or anywhere else.

Wake-up service. In all hotels you can make a request for an early call to wake you up.

Entertainment service. Hotels can organize sightseeing tours, entertainments.

The larger the hotel, the greater the number of services offered. There is a services directory in each room that tells the guest how to get different services. Tourists must pay for most hotel services if they use them.
