Phrasal Verbs and Word Combinations
1. to look for – шукати, e.g. I’m looking for Steve – have you seen him?
to look after – піклуватися про когось/щось, e.g. Don’t worry, I’ll look after the children tomorrow.
to look forward to smth or doing smth – чекати із нетерпінням, очікувати, передчувати, e.g. I’m really looking forward to our vacations and your coming.
look out! – обережно! стережися! e.g. Look out! There is a puddle in front of you!
2. By name – на ім’я; to know sb by name – знати когось на ім’я… e.g. It’s a big school but the principal knows everyone by name.
to name sb after – називати когось на честь…, e.g. Bill is named after his father.
3. to be proud of – пишатися, e.g. Jane is very proud of her new car.
to be proud to do/be sth, e.g. She was proud to be part of such a prestigious project.
Word Combination (WC): as proud as a peacock – гордий, як павич.
4. to do well at sth (See Appendix 2) – робити успіхи у чомусь, добре встигати у навчанні, e.g. Robert does well at school.
5. to do one’s best (See Appendix 2) - намагатися робити все можливе, докладати всіх зусиль, e.g. As long as you do your best you’ll succeed.
6. to be interested in – цікавитися чим-небудь, e.g. Sheila is interested only in her own business.
7. to be good at – добре вміти, знатися на …, e.g. She is good at Math.
8. to make up one’s mind – вирішити, прийняти рішення, e.g. I couldn’t make up my mind, so in the end I bought both.
9. to deal with – вести справу, розглядати питання, стосуватися, e.g. In future I’d like to deal with politics.
10. to work hard at/on – тяжко, старанно працювати над…, e.g. I work hard at/on my pronunciation.
11. to take a preparatory course – займатися на підготовчих курсах, e.g. Before entering the university she took some preparatory courses in/on English and German.
12. WC: as busy as a bee – дуже зайнятий.
14. to have free/spare time – мати вільний час, e.g. Now I am a freshman and I have no free time.
15. оn time – вчасно, саме в зазначений час, e.g. These buses never arrive on time. іn time – завчасно або саме вчасно, e.g. Brian usually gets home in time to bath the children.
