Unit 4 fuelling system
Exercise 1. Read and translate the text.
Types of the Fuelling Systems
An airplane mechanically ready for flight must be serviced and loaded with sufficient fuel and oil. High-test gasoline or a high-grade kerosene is used depending upon the type of engine. The aircraft fuel tanks are filled by large fuelling trucks or a centralized hydrant fuelling system. This system is used when the fuel is piped underground to the airplane parking position. Several aircraft can be serviced at a time. The fuel is filtered, metered and its flow and pressure regulated. The centralized fuelling system is often combined with a mobile fuelling system, that is a number of fuelling vehicles (fuellers) carrying fuel to the aircraft. A fueller is a vehicle with a special fuel tank having a capacity of 3,000 gallons which can provide fuelling rate of 300-500 gallons per minute. To double the capacity of a fueller, a trailer with an additional fuel tank may be attached to the main fuelling truck.
This system does not demand large costs and much space. Besides the fuellers can provide fuelling at any parking position. The fueller is equipped with a centrifugal pump, flow control valves, a hose and a filter-water separator. Since the kerosene used by turbine engines has the capacity of carrying water, the filter must remove this water since it can be frozen at the subzero temperatures encountered at the flight altitudes of modern airplanes.
