What do you know about this country?

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the country that comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It lies off the north-west coast of the European continent. England is a vast plain. Wales and Scotland are mountainous areas. The highest mountain in Wales is Snowdon. The famous Lake District is the real tourists attraction. Great Britain is washed by Atlantic Ocean and is separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the Strait of Dover and English Channel. The rivers are not long in Britain. The Thames is the busiest and the most important river in Great Britain. The capital of Great Britain, London, stands on the Thames. The population of Great Britain is about 60 million people. The largest cities are London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester.

What are the state symbols of Great Britain?

The flag of the UK is known as the Union Jack. It’s made up from three crosses: the cross of St. George (the patron saint of England), the cross of St. Andrew (the patron saint of Scotland) and the cross of St. Patrick (the patron saint of Ireland).

The Welsh flag, called the Welsh dragon, represents a red dragon on a white and green background.

A yellow daffodil, or a "Peter’s leek”, is a national symbol of Wales.

A red rose is a national emblem of England.

A national emblem of Scotland is the thistle, a symbol of defence.

A national emblem of Ireland is the shamrock.

They say it’s important for a person to speak English nowadays because it’s popular all over the world. What is your opinion?

In the recent years English has become not only an international language, it’s now a number one language in the world. English is spoken and studied all over the world. It has become the common language of international communication.

English has become the world’s most important language in politics, science, trade and cultural relations, international sport and pop music. 75 percent of the world’s mail is in English, 60 percent of the world’s radio broadcast in English and more than half of the world’s periodicals are printed in English.

And it’s considered that English is the most fashionable language in the world nowadays. So, every educated person must know English.
