We live in the age of technology. The most exciting challenges of our time are those of wisely applying science and engineering to the improvement of our lives and world. With our increasing dependence on technology has grown the need for educated and responsiblecitizens to guide technological development.

Today's leader in society-whether a practicing engineer, professional scientist, head of a small business, member of government service, environmental lawyer, or physician-must have a strong background in technology. The goal of the Ternopil Instrument-Making Institute is to prepare students to be leaders in the creation, application, and management of technology and this goal is achieved through scientific research.

Research is broadly based, following the traditional disciplines of each department on the one hand, and encompassing areas that are at the cutting edge of each profession on the other. The activities reflect not only the interests and creativity of our faculty and students, but also their responsiveness to societal problems. While the generation of new knowledgeremains a basic function, a number of ongoing research projects have been prompted by the current needs of our nation.

Scientific research develops a spirit of independence in the student and helps them to understand the requirements of industrial enterprises Students design different instruments, robots and devices; operate experimental and industrial installations; conduct theoretical investigations conduct research in the institute library and various laboratories; write term papers and senior design projects (diploma theses) based on the problems of their research work; and see the results of their labor introduced into production.

Some of the current trends or areas of research of students and faculty at TIMI include the development of apparatus and devices for investigations and diagnostics in medicine and biology; techniques for creation of materials and of construction parts and friction units; development of equipment apparatus and instruments for mechanical, radio, food, processing, and agricultural engineering; development of new constructions of screw transports for transporting bulk materials; etc.

Scientific research, mentorships, collaborative work, and independent study projects prepare students in applying scientific knowledge and creating devices and systems that fulfill the changing needs of society.
