Semete: Migi chudan oi zuki

Ukete:

Suri ashi to the left-hand side (heiko dachi), simultaneously

 

performing migi hiki uke and hidari sukui uke catching semete at the

 

wrist and elbow. Continue by pulling semete slightly forward

 

creating kuzushi, and sliding up semete’s arm with right hand

 

attacking the throat, yubi hasami.

Notes:

The hiki uke/sukui uke combination should be performed simultaneously.

Semete: Hidari zen kutsu dachi

Ukete: Heiko dachi

Semete: Migi chudan oi zuki

Ukete: Tai sabaki to the right-hand side, finishing in hidari neko ashi dachi, while simultaneously performing the rotating downward block (otoshi hiki uke). While maintaining hidari neko ashi dachi, shift in striking to the ganka lines with open hands and palm heel focus.

Saifa

Saifa translates as “destroying strikes“ or “to tear, to shred, to crush”. Kanryo Higaonna Sensei brought this kata back from China.

1. Hazushi Waza/Otoshi Uke/Uraken Uchi

Semete: Heiko dachi.

Ukete: Heiko dachi.

Semete: Right foot steps in, grip ukete’s left wrist (tsukami waza).

Ukete: Respond by grasping own left fist with right hand and sliding at a 45° angle to your left (towards semete’s right side), simultaneously bringing both hands to the body.

Notes: Suri ashi should be far enough that semete’s arm is extended straight. Continue by sharply thrusting the left hand across the body and simultaneously pulling the left hand across the body with the right hand, breaking semete’s grip.

Semete: Step about a shoulder width to the right side, thereby moving into han zen kutsu dachi facing ukete and strike with hidari jodan gyaku zuki.

Ukete: Block the punch with hidari otoshi uke and hold onto the wrist, simultaneously stepping away with the right foot into shiko dachi, follow with jodan uraken uchi to jinchu.

Notes: The motion into shiko dachi should have a dropping feeling (tai otoshi). This motion should pull semete both forward and down into the uraken uchi.

Semete: Hidari zen kutsu dachi.

Ukete: Heiko dachi.

Semete: Migi chudan oi zuki, hidari gedan/chudan mae geri.

Ukete: Step back with right foot into hidari heiko (han zen kutsu) dachi while simultaneously performing hidari sukui uke, catching semete at the elbow, with right hand perform kaishu gedan harai uke, catching the leg by hooking with the back of the hand. Continue by attacking to the groin with hiza geri.

Semete: Withdraw the left leg stepping back into hidari han zen kutsu dachi. Ukete: Follow with kin geri.

Notes: Continue to hold semete by the elbow throughout the technique, pulling him slightly towards you while performing the kin geri.

Semete: Migi jodan oi zuki.

Ukete: Step back with right foot into hidari heiko (han zen kutsu) dachi while simultaneously performing hidari hiki (kake) uke.

Semete: Keeping right arm out, punch jodan gyaku zuki without stepping forward.

Ukete: Keep left arm out, block migi hiki (kake) uke, then immediately follow with morote nukite to just below the collarbones, then step forward with the right foot into migi heiko (han zen kutsu) dachi and strike again to the collarbones with morote shotei uchi.

4. Tetsui Uchi

Semete: Lunges forward and drops to one knee, while simultaneously trying to grab ukete’s left ankle and knee t perform nage waza.

Ukete: Pulls away the left leg, stepping back into migi zen kutsu dachi, simultaneously striking semete to the side of the head with tetsui uchi and shotei uchi. Continue by grabbing the ears (hair) and twisting towards the left taking semete down. Follow by dropping into hikui shiko dachi and attacking the eyes with the thumbs while continuing to hold the head.

Notes: Make certain that ukete continues to hold semete’s head during the takedown, thus maintaining control of the technique and providing a margin of safety for the training partner. As well, care should be taken to maintain an upright posture during hikui zen kutsu dachi.

5. Tetsui Uchi

Semete: Hidari zen kutsu dachi

Ukete: Heiko dachi

Semete: Migi chudan oi zuki

Ukete: Tai sabaki with left leg, back at a 90° angle, simultaneously swinging the right arm in an arc, deflecting the punch, continuing the arc upwards then striking down on the top of semete’s head. Continue by grabbing semete’s hair (back of head) and pulling downward towards the body and striking upwards with age zuki to semete’s throat (face).

Notes: The tai sabaki should focus on the twisting away with the hips. While this technique in the kata is performed with the hips remaining fixed during the ura zuki (age zuki) the hips may be turned to face semete during the age zuki in the bunkai.

6. Haito Uchi

Semete: Hidari zen kutsu dachi

Ukete: Heiko dachi

Semete: Chudan oi zuki

Ukete: Suri ashi to the left into neko ashi dachi, simultaneously performing kaishu chudan yoko uke with haito uchi aimed towards the kidneys.

Notes: Kaishu chudan uke should be short and powerful while the arm performing the swinging motion and haito uchi should be relaxed and snap like a whip upon impact.

Seiyunchin

Seiyunchin means, “controlling and pulling fight”. Kanryo Higaonna Sensei also brought this Kata back from China.
