The infinitive as an attribute

In this function the infinitive is used in English more often than in Russian or Ukrainian. Different forms of the infinitive can be used in this function, though the most common is non-perfect active. The infinitive can modify can modify a large range of parts of speech:

1. Nouns,

e.g. The best thing to do would be to go back.

The “Watchman” was the only paper ever to have published his poems.

It isn’t an idea to be proud of.

She had no wish to be seen there again.

2. Pronouns, especially negative, indefinite and universal,

e.g. Fred had everything to make his life happy.

There was nothing to be done.

Tom had done nothing to be ashamed of.

Derek was not the one to run about and discuss his affairs with everybody.

3. Numerals,

e.g. The Browns were the first to come.

4. Adjectives like

much, so much, little, a lot, no more, no less, a little more, a good deal of, enough

e.g. I have a lot to add. A man in your position has so much to lose.

5. The infinitive can be introduced by a conjunction or preposition like what, how, about, of, etc.

e.g. Susan had no clear idea what to do and how to do it.

Philip had no information about when to start.

6. In this function the attribute can be expressed by a conjunctive infinitive phrase with the following conjunctions:

who what where how when whether

e.g. I had no idea who to rely on in that situation.

7. Into Russian/Ukrainian the infinitive in the function of an attribute is translated in the following ways:

• He had a good friend to rely on. = У него был хороший друг, на которого можно было положиться.

• Don’t disturb me. I have a paper to write. = Не тревожьте меня. Мне надо написать статью.

• It’s time to have dinner. = Пора обедать.

• Mr. Ferdinand is not a man to be trusted. = Мистер Фердинанд не тот человек, которому можно доверять.

• The best thing to do was to leave at once. = Самое лучшее, что можно было сделать, это уйти сразу же.

• We had nothing to lose. = Нам нечего было терять.

• Our French teacher is someone to admire. = Наш учитель французского языка – тот человек, которым можно восхищаться.

• I had little more to add to her words. = Я мало что мог добавить к ее словам.

• I have no idea who to turn to for help. = Я не знаю, к кому обратиться за помощью.

TASK 17. Explain how you understand the proverbs and saying given below and whether you agree with them.

1. It’s a poor mind indeed which can’t think of at least two ways to solve a problem.

2. Nothing is often a good thing to say and always a clever thing to say.

3. What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it in?

4. Happiness is not the absence of problems but the ability to deal with them.

5. A recession is a period to tighten your belts because in a depression you have no belt to tighten and in a panic you have no pants to hold up.

TASK 18. Translate into English paying special attention to the use of the infinitive as attributes.
