Infinitive as the predicate
In this function the infinitive is used in interrogative and negative-interrogative sentences.
Only bare infinitive is used in this construction.
Interrogative sentences of this kind usually mean that there is no need to perform the action,
e.g. Why waste your time on this good-for-nothing man?
Why go there now? We can do it tomorrow.
Negative-interrogative sentences usually mean that there is nothing to prevent someone from performing the action,
e.g. Why not cook dinner now when we still have time?
Why not invite Steve to the party? He will entertain everybody.

The infinitive as the predicative
to be + infinitive
In this function the infinitive is often used after the link verb “to be”,
e.g. Steve’s intention was to solve this problem as soon as possible.
In this function the infinitive is often met after several special nouns used as the subject of the sentence. Their number is limited. The most commonly used nouns are:
action aim attempt consequence experience risk
advice hope ambition business custom reason
duty job plan method principle role
Idea ideal need problem purpose rule
habit object order function happiness task
wish thing intention instruction difficulty target
e.g. The best thing was not to argue.
The question is what to do first.
To be born in poverty was to be doomed to humiliation.
Other parts of speech can also be used as the subject:
pronouns, e.g. All he wanted was to be left alone.
subject clause, e.g. The most I can do is to give advice.
gerundial phrase, e.g. Living with Edward was to have a constant nightmare.
4. Infinitive can also perform the function of part of a predicative when the other part is expressed by an adjective. The adjective usually used in this function are as follows:
hard easy impossible comfortable pleasant amusing possible
e.g. A true friend is difficult to find. It is the greatest of all blessings.
Our boss is not easy to persuade.
