III. READING AND SPEAKING

"7 Read and say which of the characters are good at housekeeping. What chores are described as done or to be done in each of the texts? What is your own attitude towards doing them?

1)She was disastrously lazy. She would lie about the house, reading magazines and spilling ash on the floor, while the dirt piled up in the corners, and the dogs climbed on to the beds and chairs, and the milk went sour in the musty larder.

(Monica Dickens) 2) ...he came back into the room: the bed

had not been tidied for a week, a spilt ashtray messed the floor, odds and ends of clothing decorated improbable places, lamp-shades and such. But tomorrow, if he felt better, there would be a general cleaning; perhaps he'd have the walls repainted, maybe fix the yard.

(Truman Capote)

3) The apartment was in its state of disorder, with the bed unmade and Eric's clothes draped over chairs and hanging from knobs.

(JamesBaldwin)

4)Tom's study was as chaotic and disordered as David's room had been neat, and . Hunler said: "You guys only have two choices in life. Stand up or to go to bed. Where's to sit in this mess?" Tom emptied a chair by the simple expedient of tilting it forward and letting its burden of books and notebooks slither to the floor.

8)

Ten minutes later, equipped with dusting cloths, pail, mop, and broom, Joseph Champlin was attacking two week's accumulation of dirt.

(Ann Faibairn)

It was left to Granny to clear up and wash the breakfast things, make her own bed, dust and sweep a little, go to the shops. Once a week she went to the launderette.

(Celia Date)

She made breakfast and, when Guy had gone, did the sinkful of dishes and put the kitchen to rights.

(Ira Levin)

Behind him he knew Tom was setting up

a collapsible ironing board... He had plugged the cord of the iron into an outlet, and was

laying the leg of a pair of trousers on the ironing board. He accepted a

wrung-out damp towel from Sudsy, smiled his thanks, then

spat on a finger and tested the iron. There was no sizzle, and he stood waiting, holding

it up.
