Class 6. Subjunctive II and The Conditional Mood.

Exercise 1. Use the verb to be in the Subjunctive II mood form to express an unreal wish.

Model: It’s not sunny today. – If only it were sunny today!

It was foggy yesterday. – If only it hadn’t been foggy yesterday!

1. It’s autumn now. 2. He isn’t my friend. 3. She wasn’t my teacher. 4. This dress isn’t my size. 5. The bag was too expensive. 6. I am a dreamer. 7. My holiday wasn’t long. 8. This money isn’t mine. 9. The party is very dull. 10. The car was out of order. 11. The boss is out. 12. We were scared. 13. English grammar is so difficult! 14. Uncountable nouns are so misleading! 15. Simon smokes too much. 16. She didn’t learn the news. 17. I have to work even on Sunday. 18. They have no chance to travel.

Exercise 2. Respond to the statements by giving advice or making a recommendation with a suitable infinitive form.

  1. I have got toothache. – You had better go to the dentist.

  2. John is terribly overweight.

  3. You’re always late for work!

  4. Our train leaves in a few minutes.

  5. Peter was involved in an accident with his car.

  6. Someone has stolen my wallet!

  7. The rain is coming through the roof.

  8. Mary got terribly sunburnt yesterday.

  9. I’ve been feeling rather off colour recently.

  10. We all got soaked in yesterday’s downpour.

  11. Let’s face it. We are hopelessly lost!

  12. The sink is blocked!

Exercise 3. Supply the correct forms of the verbs in brackets.

  1. Which would you sooner … (to be)? A pilot or a passenger?

  2. You might be late for the meeting. I would rather you … (to catch) an earlier train.

  3. If I had lived in the past, I would sooner … (to be) a peasant than a king.

  4. I won’t be home till very late. I’d sooner you … (not to wait) for me.

  5. He took a risk investing money with them. I’d rather he … (not to do) it.

  6. I don’t mind your borrowing my ladder, but I would sooner you … (to ask) me first.

  7. I like my job. I’d rather … (to make) my living as a teacher than anything else.

  8. I know my daughter is enjoying herself, but I’d rather she … (to be) here than abroad.

  9. I wish my job were secure. I’d sooner … (not have to ) worry about it.

  10. I’d rather you … (to be) present when we signed the agreement.

Exercise 4. Fill in the correct form of the verbs in brackets.

  1. I wish I …(meet) that actor when he was in town.

  2. He wishes he … (buy) that book last week – now he hasn’t got enough money.

  3. If only I … (be) older, I could have a driving licence.

  4. I wish I …(can) remember where that book is.

  5. Tony wishes he … (go) to Paris with his brother, but he has to work.

  6. If only I … (not make) that mistake yesterday.

  7. If only the dog … (not eat) the tickets – now we can’t go to the show.

  8. We wish this box … (not be) so heavy – I can’t lift it.

  9. We wish we …(not leave) the gate open. Now the dog has escaped.

  10. Paula wishes she …(have) more time for gardening, but she hasn’t.

  11. Ms Brown wishes she …(write) those letters yesterday.

Exercise 5. What do you say in these situations? Write sentences with I wish … would.

  1. It’s raining. You want to go out, but not in the rain.

  2. You’re waiting for John. He’s late and you are getting impatient.

  3. Your friend drives very fast. You don’t like it.

  4. You can hear a baby crying and you’re trying to study.

  5. Jack always leaves the door open. This annoys you.

  6. You’re looking for a job – so far without success. Nobody will give you a job.

  7. A lot of people drop litter in the street. You don’t like it.

  8. Brian has been wearing the same clothes for years. You think he needs some new clothes.

Exercise 6. a) Ms Barrington thinks her son has some bad habits, and she’d like to change them. Write what she says to him.

  1. He’s always coming home so late.

  2. He wears such dirty clothes.

  3. He plays music late at night.

  4. He isn’t very polite to his father.

  5. He doesn’t wash his hair very often.

  6. He doesn’t get to school on time.

b) Her son, John, doesn’t like his personal appearance, his home life, or his school. He wishes things were different. Write what he’s thinking.

  1. My nose is too big.

  2. I’m not very popular at school.

  3. I have to go to school every day.

  4. My mother is always telling me off.

  5. I’ve got no money.

  6. I can’t find a girlfriend.

c) Mr Barrington is miserable too. He has made some mistakes in business, and his company has given him the sack. He wishes he could change things. Write what he is thinking.

  1. I refused that promotion.

  2. I developed that terrible project.

  3. I rented the wrong warehouse in January.

  4. I forgot to test that new mechanism.

  5. I was rude to the director.

Exercise 7. Rewrite the sentences, using I wish.

  1. I haven’t got a car. I would very much like to have one.

  2. I went to bed late last night. I regret it now.

  3. We don’t live in a nice big flat. I would like us to.

  4. I didn’t buy that dress. I regret it now.

  5. He wouldn’t stop shouting. I would like him to.

  6. I lost my temper. I regret it now.

  7. You didn’t tell me the truth. I am very sorry you didn’t.

  8. You’re playing that music. I would like you to stop playing it, but I don’t expect that you will.
