Exercises:

  1. Separate the two stories: ‘Traveling of my dream’ and ‘Russia is my country’

There are many wonderful places on our planet. But I think many people have their own place, where they would like to go (sometimes in their dreams). Sometimes people want to imagine themselves in unreal place in order to have a rest. A person is tired of hustle and bustle or he is thinking of something important…

Seas and oceans wash Russia in the north, south, east and west. The Black Sea is in the South; the Baltic Sea is in the West. The plant and animal worlds of my country are also very rich. There are a lot of different animals, birds and plants in our forests, fields and mountains.

Very often I imagine myself in such unreal place. When I feel bad I pretend myself a small creature sitting on a sandy beach. In front of me there is a tall ancient lighthouse on the rock in the sea. And I can see only a cold North Sea. Outstanding natural beauty is everywhere and while you are admiring the wildlife you can think something over. It’s getting dark, but the bright sun breaks through the leaden clouds and it makes the landscape wild and quiet and at this moment a few sun rays touch my hands and suddenly it’s getting warm. I don’t care the strong wind, the darkness, and the big waves. This moment will burn in my memory forever. I’m just thinking of our beautiful world and I say: “Thank you, God, for happiness to be born a man.”

One Russian symbol is the Russian national flag. This flag has three wide stripes on it. The stripes are white, blue and red. The upper stripe is white, the middle stripe is blue and the red stripe is at the bottom. These colours have always been symbolic in Russia: white – noble and sincere, blue – honest and devoted – devoted to friends, family and to the country. The red colour has always meant love and bravery.

From early ages people like traveling. In the past traveling was very dangerous, but it didn’t stop explorers to investigate our planet.

Russia is my country. It is the biggest country in the world. Russia is situated on two continents: Europe and Asia. The Urals (the Ural mountains) form a natural border between the continents. The Volga river is the longest river in Europe. It flows into the Caspian Sea. There are many beautiful old towns – both big and small – on its banks. Practically all of them are interesting places, famous for their history.

If I am asked a question “Where would you like to go”, I can’t answer this question immediately. It’s a difficult question for me, because I’d like to go wherever I can. We can choose any place and this place on the planet is beautiful, unique and may be unexplored. Modern means of communication make the world a small place. It is very useful to visit new place and meet new people. Traveling is the best way of learning foreign languages, traditions, cultures and making new friends.

Another symbol of Russia which all Russian people know and love is the birch tree. You can find these trees everywhere. People sing beautiful songs with poetic words about birch trees Russian people have always loved their country though life. Russian people have always been devoted to their Motherland.

2. Moscow. Read and say if the statements are true (T), false (F) or not mentioned (NM) (для слабых студентов)

Moscow is the capital of Russia, its political, economic and cultural center. It was founded 8 centuries ago by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky. In the 14th century Moscow was the center of the struggle of Russian lands for the liberation from the tartar yoke. In the 16th century under Ivan the Terrible Moscow became the capital of the new united state. Though Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1712, Moscow remained the heart of Russia.

Now Moscow is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The heart of Moscow is Red Square. The Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral are masterpieces of ancient Russian architecture. On the territory of Kremlin you can see old cathedrals, the Bell Tower, the Palace of Congress, the Tzar-Cannon and the Tzar-Bell.

1. Prince Yuri Dolgoruky was a founder of Moscow. 2. Peter the Great built a new capital. 3. Ivan Terrible was a tzar when Moscow was the center of struggle for the liberation from the tartar yoke. 4. The St’Basil’s Cathedral is on the Red Square. 5.
