Bank Robbery Prevented by Brave Police Officer

There was a bank robbery at the National Bank on Richmond Road, Bristol, yesterday afternoon. Two armed men walked into the bank just before closing time at five thirty. One of the men drew a machine gun from the briefcase he was holding and told the people in the bank to put their hands up. He then demanded money. When the bank manager explained that there wasn't any money because it had just been taken away by a security van, the robbers got angry. The second man took a gun from his jacket pocket and fired a shot into the air. He shouted that if the people working at the bank didn't find him some money, he would start killing people.

Luckily, an off-duty police officer, Constable Errol Mason was walking outside the bank when he heard the gun shot. He looked in the window and saw the dangerous situation. He used a nearby public phone box to call his colleagues at the police station for help. Within a few minutes, patrol cars started to arrive.

When the armed men heard the sirens of the police cars, they dropped their guns and ran out of the bank in panic. Constable Mason prevented the criminals from getting away by attacking them as they came out of the front door. Seconds later, he was helped by other police officers who arrested the criminals.

Test № 2

Read the interview and questions below. For each question, mark the letter next to the correct answer.

Interviewer: Mr. Blake, could you tell us how you became one of the city's

richest businessmen?

Mr. Blake: The only way to be successful in business is to be very

competitive. If you don't sell things aggressively, you won't

make any money. After all, everybody is in business to make a

profit, aren't they?

Interviewer. Yes, I suppose so. Do you spend much time working?

Mr. Blake: Yes, 1 do. 1 work very long hours. But I have a lot of things done

by other people, too. You can't do everything yourself, can you?

Interviewer: Do you have many employees?

Mr. Blake: Yes, but it is always difficult to find good people to work for you.

I'd be out of business if 1 gave some, of the people who come for

interviews a job! Some of them are so lazy! I often have to

interview hundreds of people for just one job.

Interviewer: Indeed?

Mr. Blake: Oh, yes. This is why it's very important to keep the good

employees I've already got.

Interviewer: How do you manage that?

Mr. Blake: The best way is to provide good working conditions. 1 pay my

employees a lot of money and if they are hard working, I give

them a good chance of promotion.

Interviewer: Oh, I see. One last question Mr. Blake. Can you tell me if you

like working in business?

Mr. Blake: Yes, I don't just like it, 1 love it. I enjoy working with my

colleagues and 1 get a lot of satisfaction because of my success. But it's a twenty-four hour a day job and I carry a telephone with me everywhere, even to the golf course!
