The Unified State Exam remains _1_ - but change is coming.

While high school students in Russia are sweating through their Unified State Exam, the newly minted education and science minister, Dmitry Livanov, is preparing new education _2_, to be implemented by 2020. But what may revolutionize standardized testing in Russia is a newly legalized tradition of public observers-much like with the elections.

Under Livanov’s new rules, _3_ subjects will include mathematics, Russian language and literature, a foreign language, history, safety training and physical education. Physics, chemistry and biology will be taught on a basic level, under the rubric of natural _4_. Students will be able _5_ which subjects to study more thoroughly according to their own educational profile (be they technology-oriented, humanities- oriented, and so on), with three or four additional _6_.

The total number of school hours paid towards a student’s education from the state _7_ will remain at 37 hours, but the new law also gives _8_ to pupils to choose a specialty and develop their individual potential under the _9_ of tutors within the _10_ of those hours. This new measure was hailed by some education experts and criticized by others.

Ростовские отличники поймали «Синюю птицу»

Если ты учишься без троек, неоднократно участвовал в школьных олимпиадах, творческих конкурсах, но финансовые возможности твоей семьи ограничены и не вполне позволяют раскрыть все твои таланты, ты сможешь стать участником благотворительной программы «Синяя птица».

Проект «Синяя птица» не имеет аналогов в России. В 2009 году он стартовал в трех регионах страны и постепенно охватывает все большее число городов. Его цель - помочь талантливым и перспективным выпускникам школ, находящимся в сложных социальных и экономических обстоятельствах, сделать правильный выбор, поступить в вуз и получить высшее образование. Как правило, это дети, оставшиеся без попечения родителей или талантливые ребята из семей с небольшим доходом. Ростов-на-Дону впервые подключился к программе, и ростовским «птенцам» «Синей птицы» проект презентовал его идейный вдохновитель - Банк Хоум Кредит. 18 октября в торжественной обстановке первые ростовские «птенцы» «Синей птицы» получили пластиковые карты для перечисления стипендии, небольшие подарки и полезную бизнес - литературу. Мы считаем, что такие дети - это будущее России, наш интеллектуальный ресурс. Каждый из них - это лидер, - говорит директор ростовского регионального центра Банка Хоум Кредит Виталий Бровченко: - «Прежде всего, этот проект даст ребятам финансовую независимость, и, мы надеемся, хороший стимул для развития собственной карьеры»

Суть проекта проста: пока ребята обучаются в вузе на бюджетной основе, банк оказывает им поддержку. Они получают стипендию на протяжении всего периода обучения при условии, если будут учиться на «четыре» и «пять».

А для того, чтобы получать стипендию, им достаточно присылать нам отсканированные зачетные книжки с печатью о закрытии сессии. Если мы видим, что там все на «хорошо» и «отлично», наш «птенец» остается в «гнезде».

Поиск талантливых ребят по всей России - дело кропотливое, но благодарное. Тем более, участие в жизни молодых людей не ограничивается выплатой стипендии. В течение учебного года сотрудники «Синей птицы» много общаются с ребятами, созваниваются, дарят подарки, стараются понять, чем они живут, а летом и зимой собирают стипендиатов из разных регионов вместе.

Для меня попадание в этот проект стало приятной неожиданностью, - признается студентка первого курса ЮФУ, стипендиат «Синей птицы» Мария Шкопоед. - Ничего в жизни не происходит случайно, и теперь я уверена: «Синяя птица» дает мне шанс исполнить свою мечту, стать, например, депутатом Законодательного собрания или даже мэром города.

Сейчас я учусь на факультете государственного и муниципального управления Президентской Академии, - говорит первокурсник Сергей Смолянинов. - Для меня участие в этой программе - это еще и шанс открыть собственное дело. Я мечтаю о создании транспортно-логистической компании.

После чествования новых участников программы организаторы вовлекли их в интересную деловую игру и выразили надежду, что в будущем году в Ростове «птенцов» «Синей птицы» станет гораздо больше.

1. Make a presentation on the educational system of GB, the USA and Russia. (university education). Be ready to answer your groupmates' questions.

2. Compare the educational systems in Russia, the USA and GB. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each system?

3. Discuss the ways the state education system in Russia differs from that in GB and in the USA.

4. Compare the private sector of education in Russia, the USA and GB. What are the arguments for and against having a separate system of education for those who can afford to pay for it?

5. One of your professors has just returned from GB where she was on business trip getting acquainted with the British educational system and the system of teacher training in GB. Interview him/her. Ask questions on the subject, don't forget to ask him/her about general impressions.

6. Discuss the problems that young people face choosing a career in GB and the USA. Compare them to the problems young people from Russia have. Speak about the ways students from these countries solve them. Two variants of the discussion are possible:

a) discuss it with your classmates;

b) form two groups of British, American and Russian students and hold a round table discussion.

7. A group of university professors from Britain came to our University. Be a guide to them. Show them your university and tell about the main educational principles and name the characteristic features of your university. Be ready to answer their questions.

8. Look through the given information and speak about the financial aspect of getting education in GB. Discuss this problem in class.
