The Vologda State Polytechnic University

The VSPU was founded jn January, 1965 as a branch of the North-Western Extra-Mural Polytechnic Institute, 10 years later it became independent and in 1999 it was given a rank of University. Now it is one of the largest in the area. At presen lthe totai student population is about 12 000 students. Since its first intake more than 40 000 engineers, economists and civil engineers have graduated from the University. The University's 36 departments have over 400 academic staff with a wide range of professional and academic experience. All-Russian and international scientific conferences are held at the University that has extensive capabilities and a flourishing research program.

The Vologda University is housed in 6 buildings. It has all the advantages of science laboratories and equipment, a computer centre and study facilities. Some of the lecture theatres are equipped with the television sets and DVD. There's also a library and three reading halls. The library is considerably well-stocked. Apart from scientific and specialist’s collection it contains a collection of fiction.

Sports facilities are as follows - a sports centre having a weight training room, a gym and a multi-purpose sports hall arid outdoor stadium with tracks and playing fields.

The University also possesses a health centre in the city and a recreation camp in the countryside. Here facilities for sports and recreation are comprehensive.

The Polytechnic University has 6 Faculties: Power Engineering, Civil Engineering, The Faculty of Ecological Engineering, The Faculty of Industrial Management and Innovation Technology, Humanities Faculty. A valuable contribution is made by the Faculty for Evening and Correspondence students.

The University provides training for industry and commerce in many different fields.

The Power Engineering Faculty includes the following fields of study: Power Supply; Electric Drives and Automation of Industrial and Technological Installations; Information systems in Management; Computers, Computing Complexes and Networks; Management and Information in Technological Systems; Engineering in Bio-Medical Practice. The specialized departments and their core courses help to combat the problems of good training in the specialist subjects. The departments of Physics, Higher Mathematics, Electrical Engineering also belong here.

The Faculty of Industrial Management and Innovation Technology includes: Machine Building Technology; Automobiles, their Environment and Equipment; Management and Economics for Machine Building Industry etc. Apart from the specialized departments and Departments of Theory and Design of Machines and Mechanisms, Manufacturing Management, Theoretical Mechanics and Flexible Manufacturing Systems belong here as well.
