Conversation on Board Ship

Two Englishmen were going to New York by ship. For two days they sat side by side without saying a word to each other. On the third day one of them fell asleep and his book fell on the desk with a loud noise. This broke the silence bet­ween them. The other man picked up the book and the following conversation took place between them.

• Thank you very much. Going to America?

• Yes.

• So am I.

T: Were the two Englishmen going to New York by ship?

P_x: Yes, they were.

T: Did they speak to each other or not?

P₂: They didn’t say a word to each other.

T: Why didn’t the Englishmen speak to each other?

People like to think that life was better in the past. Till air was cleaner, the water was purer, life was safer and, eer tainly, it was cheaper. But were the good old days really mo good? Probably not. Many of today’s problems existed in I lie past, and there were other problems then that we rarely face today.

Pollution was a very important problem for city govern­ments in the last century, particularly with regards to water supplies. They had some idea that water could be polluted, but they didn’t know how. Trying to get pure water was a big problem.

The cities of the 19th century were dirty. There was a lot of pollution from horses and other animals. And people were careless about throwing out litter. Communicable diseases were a big problem. There was malaria, cholera, and typhoid. A lot of children died when they were very young. While the­re were no cars to kill people, there were many fatalities and injuries caused by runaway horses.

The old days were not as good as some people think they were.

Last summer my parents took me to London for a few days. The weather was fine. It wasn’t raining. We walked about the city. I saw Trafalgar Square and visited the National Gallery which is situated there. There are so many famous paintings in the gallery. My mother liked them very much. But I couldn’t stay in the gallery for a long time as I was tired.

My father showed me the Houses of Parliament and the British Museum. The museum is very big. I liked the old coins and books which I saw there. We had a bus tour of the city. From the top of the double-decker I could see Bucking­ham Palace and Queen Victoria Memorial. I took many pic­tures of London. I think it is a beautiful city. I liked it a lot.
