Unit 13. Adjective/Adverb.

Exercise 1. Correct the words underlined where necessary.

Example: Our holiday was too short – the time went quick. – Our holiday was too short – the time went quickly.

1. The police declared that driver of the car was serious injured. 2. Be quiet, please. I’m preparing for my test in constitutional law. 3. The defendant waited nervous in the hall before the hearing of his case. 4. Why was the solicitor so unfriendly when I saw him yesterday? 5. It rained continuous for three days and all the evidence was destroyed. 6. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were very happy married, no one could even imagine that they would divorce. 7. This student’s French is no very good but his German is almost fluent. 8. The president of this commercial enterprise lived in America for five years, so she speaks very well English. 9. Ann likes wearing colourful clothes, but they are inappropriate in the courtroom. 10. Sue is terrible upset about losing her job, unfortunately she is unemployed now. 11. Felony is any of the more seriously crimes such as murder, larceny, arson and aggravated assault. 12. Evidence which is obtained from the unlawfully search may not be used in a criminal proceeding.

Exercise 2. Choose a word from each box to complete each sentence.

Exercise 3. Correct the mistake where necessary. Pay attention to the use of adjectives or adverbs.

Example: We lost the case because we didn’t prepare good. – We lost the case because we didn’t prepare well.

1. Ann is a magistrate. She has been working a lot recent. 2. Give my best wishes to your clients. I hope they are finely. 3. The suspects behaved very good. 4. The justice tried hardly to remember the plaintiff’s name but he couldn’t. 5. After graduating from law faculty Jack has started his own business. Everything is going quite good. 6. The professor was reading the lecture too quick. The students asked him to read more slow. 7. See you soonly! 8. If you want to be a policeman you must be a fast runner. All policemen can run very fastly. 9. I got up lately this morning. 10. Your writing is terrible. I can hard read it. 11. The company’s financial situation is not well at present. It may become bankrupt. 12. One of the unusually features of the American judicial system is the power to declare legislation unconstitutional.

Exercise 4. Choose the most suitable word in each sentence.

Example: Your cold sounds terrible/terribly. – Your cold sounds terrible.

Exercise 5. Complete the sentences with adverbs. The first letters of each adverb are given.

Exercise 6. Translate the sentences from Russian into English.
