Foreword
It is an honor to introduce TMS and tDCS for Psychiatric Disorders. This comprehensive book explores the application of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques in the management of psychiatric conditions. NIBS, encompassing methods
such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current
stimulation (tDCS), modulates cortical excitability and brain function through targeted stimulation. In recent years, these techniques have undergone signicant
advancements and are widely implemented in psychiatric treatments. TMS, for
instance, modulates cortical excitability by delivering stimulation at frequencies
from 1 to 50Hz, inducing either excitatory or inhibitory effects depending on the
protocol. Similarly, anodal tDCS is generally considered to enhance cortical activity
in targeted regions, whereas cathodal tDCS is associated with inhibitory effects.
Numerous meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials have consistently validated the efcacy of these modalities, particularly in treating major depressive
disorder.
Co-editors Dr. Wei Zheng and Dr. Yuping Ning, along with their collaborators,
have developed this detailed and authoritative resource. It comprises 13 chapters
authored by experts from more than 15 tertiary hospitals. This book provides a thorough examination of advanced strategies for leveraging TMS and tDCS in psychiatric care. Each chapter is meticulously structured to enhance understanding and
practical application, addressing fundamental principles and complex methodologies. Designed to offer concise and accessible insights, this text serves as an indispensable reference for general practitioners, psychiatrists, and researchers
specializing in NIBS technologies. Its comprehensive coverage positions it as a
foundational work in advancing the global adoption of NIBS for psychiatric
disorders.

Preface
Our understanding of nervous system plasticity has signicantly advanced in recent
years, encompassing both healthy individuals and those experiencing neurological
and neuropsychiatric dysfunctions. This progress has laid a solid foundation for the
application of neuromodulation techniques in managing neurodegenerative diseases. Since the introduction of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) in the 1950s,
neuromodulation has undergone exponential growth, evolving from basic electrical
stimulation to a diverse array of physical stimulation modalities, including electricity, magnetism, and beyond. Advances in noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS),
such as the development of improved coils, rened stimulus paradigms, and the
integration of neuronavigation, have signicantly enhanced precision, expanded
research insights, and elevated clinical applicability. While pharmacological and
psychotherapeutic interventions often fail to meet the therapeutic expectations of
patients with psychiatric disorders due to limited efcacy, NIBS emerges as a promising complementary treatment modality, effectively bridging this therapeutic gap.
The clinical efcacy and underlying mechanisms of NIBS in treating psychiatric
disorders exhibit considerable variability. This book focuses exclusively on the two
most widely utilized NIBS techniques in clinical practice: transcranial magnetic
stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). To facilitate
a comprehensive understanding of the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of
these techniques across various psychiatric disorders, the book integrates the latest
clinical guidelines and addresses key questions. What are TMS and tDCS, and how
have these methods evolved? What novel approaches are being adopted in their
application? How are these techniques employed in different psychiatric disorders,
and what are the associated treatment protocols and patterns? What do current ndings reveal about their efcacy and safety? How have clinical experiences shaped
the use of TMS and tDCS, and how might recent discoveries contribute to managing
psychiatric episodes? Finally, what clinical recommendations guide the application
of these techniques in treating specic psychiatric conditions?
Despite the wealth of clinical essays and books on NIBS and its applications in
psychiatric disorders, a critical challenge persists: the need to deliver a comprehensive synthesis of foundational principles and encyclopedic knowledge tailored for
clinical practice. To address this, the editors propose a dual-layered classication
approach, using specic psychiatric disorders as the primary framework and treatment regimens and patterns of TMS and tDCS as the secondary structure. This

approach aims to guide the design of NIBS paradigms that target distinct symptoms
across various mental disorders, enhancing clinical diagnosis and treatment.
This book represents a thorough and systematic exploration of NIBS in psychiatric disorders, a subject to which I have dedicated years of research and profound
interest. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who provided invaluable assistance and guidance throughout this endeavor; without their support, the completion
of this project would not have been possible. As the Latin phrase per aspera ad astra
(“through hardship to the stars”) reminds us, the journey of compiling and presenting this material has been both challenging and rewarding. The process has remained
steadfastly rooted in rigorous inquiry, intellectual curiosity, and an enduring passion
for medical research. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and
completeness of this book, areas for improvement undoubtedly remain. Future editions will address these aspects, incorporating revisions and updates as the eld
continues to evolve.
To the readers, it is my hope that this work offers both answers and inspiration,
guiding you through an intellectual odyssey of discovery and understanding in the
transformative domain of NIBS for psychiatric disorders.
