Exercise 6. Fill in the gaps with the words from the list:
ownership, shares, accuracy, ownership, stocks, certificates, referring,
interchangeably, same.
In today’s financial markets, the distinction between ….. and …..
has been somewhat blurred. Generally, these words are used ….. to refer to
the pieces of paper that denote ….. in a particular company, called stock
certificates. However, the difference between the two words comes from
the context in which they are used.
For example, “stock” is a general term used to describe the ….. of
any company, in general, and “shares” refers to a the ownership certificates
of a particular company. So, if investors say they own stocks, they are
generally ….. to their overall ownership in one or more companies.
Technically, if someone says that they own shares - the question then
becomes - shares in what company?
Bottom line, stocks and shares are the ….. thing. The minor
distinction between stocks and shares is usually overlooked, and it has more
to do with syntax than financial or legal ….. .
Exercise 7. Translate into English.
NYSE Group

Morgan Stanley, UBS и Fidelity Investments.
NYSE

Speaking
Exercise 1. If shares of a particular company become more popular, the
shares price will rise. The reason for it may be that the company’s profits
have started growing or the economy is booming.
People buying and selling shares on the stock market are called
speculators and fall into three types. Match the types of speculators with
their functions and explain why you think so.
Exercise 2. Look at the Share Price Graphs and describe them using
following words and expressions:
decline, gain, drop, increase, rocket, rise, plummet, fluctuate, improve,
double, level off, triple, recover, fall half, peak, decrease, stabilize, crash,
bounce back, go up, go down, remain stable.

Unit 8
INFLATION
Exercise 1. Read and translate the text.
Inflation
Have you ever heard someone say something like this?
“When I was your age, money could buy a lot more than it can
these days. Hoi dogs, candy bars, and soft drinks all cost a nickel. Seems
like you can’t buy anything for a nickel any more. As for quarters, well, you
could see a movie or buy a loaf of bread, or a gallon of gas for a quarter
back then. Those were the good old days.”
In fact, the dollar was worth more “in the good old days”, and
prices for most goods were a lot lower than they are today.
Economists use the term purchasing power, or value of money, to
describe the quantity and quality of goods and services people can buy with
their money. When prices increase, money cannot buy as much, its
purchasing power declines. When prices fall, the opposite occurs. Or, to put
it another way, when prices rise, the value of money falls; when prices fall,
its value rises.
The purchasing power of the dollar has been shrinking during most
of the 20th century. Inflation has been present in seven of the ten decades in
this century. You сan also see that despite the general shrinkage in the value
of the dollar, there were two decades of deflation in which its buying
power increased.
What are the causes of inflation?
Demand-pull inflation. A situation in which there is “too much
money chasing too few goods” is often described as demand-pull inflation.
When demand for goods and services increases faster than industry’s ability
to satisfy that demand, prices increase. During the Vietnam War, for
example, factories that might have been producing consumer goods turned
instead to the production of goods for use in the war. Government spending
for military goods increased the purchasing power of many Americans. The
result was an increase in the demand for consumer goods and services at the

78
very time industry’s ability to satisfy that demand was being redirected to
military goods. Since it was impossible to increase output to satisfy
demand, prices rose.
Cost-push inflation. A period of rising prices due to an increase in
the cost of production is called cost-push inflation. Cost-push inflation
could be caused by one or more of the following: costs, wages, and/or
monopoly power.
Increases in the cost of raw materials. In 1974 and 1980 the
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) restricted
oil production. Gasoline shortages resulted in prices of fuel, oil,
and other energy sources rose.
The wage-price spiral. When labor unions win wage increases that
outpace increases in productivity, management will often raise
prices in order to maintain profits. With prices rising, other unions
may ask for wage increases to keep up with the cost of living and
so on in an inflationary spiral.
Exercise 2. Find English equivalents of the following words and
expressions in the text:
Exercise 3. Translate the following expressions from the text into
Russian:
purchasing power, value of money, general shrinkage, money chasing too
few goods, demand for goods and services, to satisfy that demand, to
increase output, to keep up with the cost of living, restricted oil production,
to maintain profits, raw materials.
Exercise 4. Put a tick next to the sentence if you think it’s true, and
correct it if it’s false.
1. Goods are more affordable now than in the past.
2. Economists use the term purchasing power, or value of money, to
describe the quantity of goods people can buy with their money.

79
3. When prices rise, the value of money falls.
4. During the deflation the buying power of dollar shrank.
5. Demand-pull inflation is when demand for goods and services
increases faster than industry’s ability to satisfy that demand. As result
prices fall.
6. Cost-push inflation – is a result of the increase in the cost of
production.
7. Cost-push inflation can be caused by labor unions.
Exercise 5. Fill in the gaps using the words from the list:
lenders, causes, opinions , purchasing power (2), money supply, inflation
rate, rate of, retail goods, a brake.
1. Inflation is also erosion in the ….. of money.
2. A chief measure of price inflation is the ….. .
3. High rates of inflation and hyperinflation can be caused by an
excessive growth of the ….. .
4. Rising wages can help fuel the ….. inflation.
5. Much economic literature was concerned with the question of what
….. inflation and what effect it has.
6. Inflation thus means an ongoing fall in the overall ….. of the
monetary unit.
7. Expansion of the money supply fuels an increase in demand for …..
and services.
8. Borrowers and ….. who expect higher inflation agree to a higher
nominal interest rate so as to preserve the real interest rate between them.
9. Although the consensus against high inflation is widespread, …..
vary over whether an inflation rate of 0 percent is better than +3 percent or
−3 percent.
10. In Russia, inflation has become ….. for long-term investment.
Exercise 6. Translate into English.

Наиболее ярко выражено в военные и кризисные периоды;
отраслях;
уровень заработной платы;
