MACHINE TOOLS
Before metal is formed into the required shape, it has to undergo a
number of processes, such as casting, rolling, welding, piercing, trimming,
spinning, bending. The machines which work on the surface of the metal
piece, or provide it with grooves or holes or with a thread, are called
machine-tools.

7
Machine tools can be operated manually, or under automatic control.
In the 1960s, computers gave more flexibility to the process. Such machines became known as computerized numerical control (CNC) machines. They could accurately repeat sequences, and could produce much
more complex pieces than even the most skilled tool operators. The most
common machine-tool is the lathe. Other machine-tools work on plane
surfaces, for example milling machines, and also planning and shaping
machines.
Hundreds of varieties of metal machine tools are ranging in size
from small machines to huge production machines weighing several
hundred tons:
1) turning machines (lathes and boring mills),
2) shapers and planers,
3) drilling machines,
4) milling machines,
5) grinding machines,
6) power saws,
7) presses.
The engine lathe is the most important of all the machine tools. It is
used to produce external or internal cylindrical surfaces. The piece is held
by the machine and is rotated while a cutting tool removes excess metal
from the external diameter. Internal turning consists of enlarging and
finishing a hole.
Shaper is a metal-cutting machine used to produce or modify flat surfaces. The cutting tool moves cutting on the forward stroke, with the piece
feeding automatically towards the tool during each return stroke. Shapers
can be horizontal or vertical.
Drilling machine is used to produce circular holes in metal with a
twist drill. It also uses a variety of other cutting tools to perform the basic
hole-machining operations.
Milling machine cuts flat metal surfaces. The piece is fed against a
rotating cutting tool. Cutters of many shapes and sizes are available for a
wide variety of milling operations. Milling machines may be manually

8
operated, mechanically automated, or digitally automated via computer
numerical control (CNC).
Press is a machine tool that changes the shape of a workpiece. Many
centuries ago, metal was shaped by hand using a hammer. Machine press
can be dangerous.
Band saw is a power tool which uses a blade consisting of a continuous band of metal with teeth along one edge. The band usually rides on
two wheels rotating in the same plane. Band saws are used for woodworking, metalworking, or for cutting a variety of other materials, and are particularly useful for cutting irregular or curved shapes. A constant flow of
liquid is poured over the blade to keep it cool and preventing it from
overheating.

Text 2.
MACHINE TOOL’S HISTORY
Before the Industrial Revolution of the XVIII-th century hand tools
were used to cut and shape materials for the production of goods such as
utensils, wagons, ships, furniture and other products. After the invention of
the steam engine, goods were produced by power-driven machines that
could only be manufactured by machine tools. Machine tools (capable of
producing accurate parts in large quantities) and jigs and fixtures (for holding the work and fixing the tool) were the important innovations that made
mass production and interchangeable parts realities in the 19th century.
The earliest steam engines possessed the inaccuracy of early machine
tools: the large cast cylinders of the engines often were bored inaccurately
by machines powered by waterwheels and originally designed to bore cannon. Within 50 years of the first steam engines, the basic machine tools
with all the fundamental features required for machining heavy metal parts
were designed and developed. Some of them were adaptations of earlier
woodworking machines; the metal lathe descended from woodcutting
lathes used in France in the XVI-th century. In 1775 John Wilkinson from
England built an accuracy machine for boring engine cylinders. In 1797
Henry Maudslay, also from England and one of the great inventors, designed and built a screw-cutting engine lathe. The most important feature
of Maudslay's lathe was a lead screw for driving the carriage. Geared to
the spindle of the lathe, the lead screw advanced the tool at a constant rate
of speed and guaranteed accurate screw threads. In 1800 Maudslay had

11
supplied his lathe with 28 change gears that cut threads of various pitches
by controlling the ratio of the lead-screw speed to the spindle speed.
The shaper was invented by James Nasmyth, who had worked in
Henry Maudslay's shop in London. In Nasmyth's machine, a workpiece
could be clamped horizontally and worked by a cutter using a reciprocating motion to plane small surfaces, cut keyways or machine other straightline surfaces. A few years later Nasmyth invented the steam hammer for
forging heavy metal pieces. Another follower of Maudslay, Joseph Whitworth, invented or improved a great number of machine tools and came to
dominate in this field. At the International Exhibition of 1862, his firm's
exhibit devoted a quarter of all the space to machine tools.
British tools were exported to Europe and to the United States in spite
of the ban and new tools were developed outside Britain. Among them was
the milling machine invented by Eli Whitney, produced in the United
States in 1818 and used by Simeon North for manufacturing firearms. The
first universal milling machine was built in 1862 by J.R. Brown in the
United States and was used to cut helical flutes in rotated drills. The turret
lathe, also developed in the USA in the middle of the XIX-th century, was
fully automatic in some operations such as making screws and it became
a sign of the significant development of the XX-th century. Various gearcutting machines achieved their full development in 1896 when F.W. Fellows, an American, designed a gear shaper that could quickly turn out
almost any type of gear.
By the end of the XIX-th century a complete revolution had taken
place in the working and shaping of metals. It created the basis for mass
production and an industrialized society. The XX-th century has been
marked by the introduction of numerous improvements of machine tools,
such as multiple-point cutters for milling machines, the development of
automated operations directed by electronic and fluid-control systems and
non-conventional techniques, such as electrochemical and ultrasonic machining. Even today the basic machine tools remain greatly the inheritance
of the XIX-th century.
