A regional project «Our Champion» –
public support for Paralympic athletes
Before you read:
Have you ever taken part in any projects in your school or university? What were they about? There is a project «Our Champion»
in of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra. What is this
project in your opinion about? Read the following text and find out
whether you are right or not.
As part of the first IPC Biathlon and Cross-Country Skiing
World Championships held in Russia, the Sochi 2014 Organizing
Committee has announced a regional Programme of public support
for athletes participating in the Paralympic Games. The Programme
will be known as «Our Champion».
The main objective of the initiative is to promote the Russian
Paralympic Team and to improve public recognition for athletes with
a disability who live in different regions of our country. The «Our
Champion» Programme will enable the residents of different Russian
regions to learn more about their fellow-countrymen who have overcome adversity and excelled in reaching the winner's podium at Russian and international sports events.
The first athlete to receive the «Our Champion» title was
Aleksey Ashapatov, Paralympic champion and record-breaker at
the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, the London 2012 Paralympic
Games and a resident of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug –
Ugra. A commemorative certificate was presented to him by Mikhail
Terentiev, Paralympic Champion and the General Secretary of the
Russian Paralympic Committee.
The «Our Champion» Project is an exciting way for Russian
people to learn about the Paralympic athletes in their country who
have achieved real feats on the path to sporting victory. The «Our

Champion» Project will evoke a response in the hearts of all Russians, and that the World Championship itself will be very successful.
Mikhail Terentiev, the General Secretary of the RPC, said that
the World Championship was the best evidence that large international sports events for people living with a disability could be recognized for their success in Russia. He was confident that the
whole country would learn from the experience of Khanty-Mansiysk
Autonomous Okrug – Ugra and that the Games in Sochi would be
a success.
Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra is the first Russian region to support the programme of raising awareness among
the Russian population about the Paralympic Games and Values.
One of the most important elements of the Programme is the «Our
Champion» Project, which embodies the spirit of the Paralympic
Movement.
Sochi has already developed a number of initiatives for
Paralympic Awareness programs and to note is an «Accessibility
Map» demonstrating barrier-free access to the Paralympic areas
in the city.

Olesya Vladykina – Swimmer,
Paralympic double-champion
BEFOR E YOU READ :
You have already learnt a lot of information about the Paralympic Games,
Paralympic champions and competitors. Look
at the photo of this young sportsman. What
can you tell us about her? What kind of sport
does she go in for? What is she famous for?
Read the following text and find out whether
you are right or not.
Olesya Vladykina was born on February
14, 1988 in Moscow. She studied at Moscow
State University of Railway Engineering.
Olesya has been a professional swimmer for almost 10 years.
A year before the Paralympic Games the tourist bus had rolled down
in Thailand, she had survived the horrible accident but lost her arm
and her back was seriously bruised. Olesya Vladykina was only
23 years old.
But the passion for swimming and her desire to take part in the
Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games helped her to return to life.
Just five months after the accident, Olesya became a
Paralympic champion, breaking the world record in the 100m
Breaststroke S8 in Beijing’s Aquatics Centre. She dedicated this gold
medal to her friend, who had died in the accident.
Two years later, O.Vladykina proved her class, winning the
world title in the 100m Breaststroke at the 2010 IPC Swimming
World Championships in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. She added
a silver medal in the 200m Individual Medley and two bronze medals
in the 50m Freestyle and the 4x100m Medley Relay.

At the 2011 IPC Swimming European Championships, Vladykina
impressed her rivals by winning a total of seven medals, including
the gold medals in her favourite event, the 100m Breaststroke,
as well as the 200m Individual Medley and the 50m Freestyle. In addition, she won two silver medals (100m Freestyle, 4x100m Medley
Relay) and two bronze medals (100m Backstroke, 4x100m Freestyle
Relay).
Most people would have become depressed after such a tragedy but Olesya amazed everybody by her courage. She didn’t waste
time feeling sorry for herself but began to train hard. Strange as
it may appear her disability gave her secret power. Here is the result:
she got a gold Olympic medal. Olesya thinks that only extreme moments make you use your potential. Her motto is «Never give up!».
On September 30, 2009 in the Kremlin Olesya Vladykina was
awarded the Order of Friendship and the Order of Honour on September 10, 2012.

Russia came second in the unofficial medal count at the
London Paralympics, earning 36 gold medals. One of the big winners
of the Games is a young lady from Moscow. She lost an arm in a car
accident, but still managed to set a new world record in swimming –
beating the time she set with her gold medal-winning effort four years
ago in Beijing. Now you know this hero’s name...
The Paralympic swimming champion is presenting a series
of films depicting Sochi’s dedication to the Paralympic Games. The first
film will be a biographical sketch on Olesya Vladykina.

Olesya Vladykina is an ambassador for the Sochi 2014
Paralympic Winter Games. She believes these Games can help
change perceptions of people with a disability around the world. This
young woman is essentially encouraging and giving confidence to those
who find themselves in difficult life situations, breaking the usual stereotypes and hang-ups and generally changing the public’s attitudes toward
people’s capabilities, broadening the horizons of hope.
