The 2012 Summer Paralympics opening ceremony was held
on 29 August 2012, starting at 20:30 BST and marking the official
opening of the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, England. The
show – named Enlightenment – had Jenny Sealey and Bradley
Hemmings as its artistic directors. Queen Elizabeth II officially
opened the Games. The ceremony was performed in front of a capacity audience of 80,000 people.
In the tense battle between the best of the best, Russian
sportsmen defended our nation’s athletic honour and our flag. They
made a very significant input into Russia’s overall achievements.
What can be a greater example of people's will for victory and
achievement drive than the Olympic Games? Only the Paralympics
are an amazing show of amazing people. This year has become the
most successful for Russian Paralympic sportsmen concluding the
London Games with a total of 102 medals and taking the second
place in an unofficial medal count.

Vladimir Putin met at the Kremlin with members of the Russian
Paralympic team – champions and medalists at the London Paralympics. Vladimir Vladimirovich congratulated them on their exceptional results at the Games in London and thanked them for their
enormous contribution to developing sports in Russia, as well as all
of Russian society. The President wished our sportsmen good
health, moral courage, and many more brilliant, well-deserved triumphs.
The President presented state decorations to gold medalists
at the London Paralympics. Five athletes were awarded the Order
of Honour, and 37 – the Order of Friendship. The Russian Paralympic team came in second in the overall team ranking thus
achieving its best Paralympic result ever. The Russian athletes won
a total of 102 medals, including 36 gold, 38 silver and 28 bronze
medals, and set 14 world records in swimming and track-and-field.

Alexey Ashapatov –
a Paralympian athlete from Surgut
BEFOR E YOU READ :
Have you ever had a chance to meet with Paralympic
champions? Do any of them live in your region or town? What kind
of sport do they go in for? Read and translate the following text and
learn more information about one of your countrymen.
Alexey Ashapatov was born on October 30,
1973 in Saratov. He graduated from the Perm State
University in 1996. After serving in the army in Noyabrsk, Alexey decided to live and work in the north.
Alexey Ashapatov played professionally in volleyball
teams of Noyabrsk, Nizhnevartovsk and Surgut:
«Torum» and «ZSK-Gazprom».
He lost his leg in an accident in 2002 but in
spite of this accident Alexey continued to go in for
sport and became a master of sports in sitting
volleyball. In addition to volleyball he seriously goes in for other kinds
of sports: International Master of Sport in armwrestling and honored
master of sports of athletics, the absolute European champion in discus among people with physical disabilities. He is trained by the
honored coach of Russia Valeriy Prokhorov.
In 2004 Alexei Ashapatov took part in the World Armwrestling
Federation Championship.
Alexey Ashapatov also took part in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. There he won two gold medals, one in the
men's F57-58 shot put and the other in the men's F57-58 discus
throw. On September 30, 2009 in the Kremlin Alexei Ashapatov was
awarded the Order of Honour.

In this photo gold medalist Alexey Ashapatov poses on the

F 57/58 on Day 6 of the London 2012 Paralympic Games at Olympic
Stadium. He has won a gold medal in the discus throw in the men’s
wheelchair category at the Paralympic Games in London, in his best
attempt setting a new world record. Alexey Ashapatov truly demonstrated the highest level of athleticism and his will and ambition to
become a true winner, and confidently made Russian team one of the
leaders in Paralympic sports.

The Paralympic swimming champion is presenting a series of
films depicting Sochi’s dedication to the Paralympic Games. One of the
films will be about shot put and discus thrower, Aleksey Ashapatov.
Now Alexey Ashapatov is the fifth-year student of the Surgut
State Pedagogical University. All teachers and students of our university are proud of Alexey Ashapatov, one of the leaders in Paralympic sports. For each of us Alexey Ashapatov serves as a bright
example of a positive, honest and courageous outlook on life.
