Glossary of literary terms
Аллегория - это особый вид повествования, который имеет повер-
хностный и более глубокий, тайный смысл. Действующие лица в аллегории
обычно олицетворяют порок или добродетель, причем существительные
нарицательные пишутся с заглавной буквы, обозначая имена действующих
лиц —Sloth/Лень, Lust/Похоть. Аллегория была очень популярна в Средние
века. Самыми известными английскими аллегориями являются The Fancy
Quenne/Королева фей Эдмунда Спенсера (1552-99) и Pilgrim’s Progress/Путь

Allegory: the word has been derived from the Greek word allegoria which
means, 'speaking otherwise'. This term acts as an extended metaphor in which,
objects, characters or actions are used to denote something other than their literal
meaning. They are used to symbolize qualities of social, religious or political
significance and characters are often personifications of abstract ideas like charity,
kindness, greed or jealousy. In other words, through allegory, authors use elements
of the narrative, to stress upon broader ideas that may not be explicitly mentioned
in the narrative.
