China
China is known to be the native land of tea. There is a wide variety of
green tea: jasmine, white, powder, etc.

Also China is the native land of porcelain. Good addition to green tea
will be a porcelain tea pot, huge jugs, small vases, glasses, plates, etc.
Silk also has appeared in China. Silk Chinese dressing – ties, shirts,
gowns, linens and underwears decorated with dragons can be a good present.
Malta
The well-known Maltese crosses are the first things to pay attention to.
They can be made from silver, gold, sometimes inlaid with stones.
You can buy the Maltese glass. Vases, ashtrays, glasses are of high quality.
Also handicraftsmen kits, sweaters from the sheep wool.
Gourmets prefer Maltese cheese of domestic manufacture. All sorts of
cheese are very delicious.
Bulgaria
In this country as a souvenir you can buy first ceramics: vases, dishes,
saucers, ashtrays and cups with Bulgarian ornaments.
Also you can bring local wine or rakiya (local vodka).
Turkey
First of all you should bring leather things from Turkey. You may buy
jackets, coats, raincoats, skirts, trousers and shorts for quite normal cost
anywhere in the country. But gold in Turkey is not of good quality, but
very cheap.
Greece.
Everywhere you can buy antique souvenirs: amphoras, plates, chess with
mythological figures of gods. There are a lot of fur factories and shops in
the country.
Italy
To leave Venice without Venetian carnival masks is to be impossible.
You can buy a «fish» (white long-nosed mask).
Don’t forget about Muranskiy glass: vases, bowls, plates and nice water
colour pictures.
Spain
In Spain you should purchase leather: bags, purses, belts, footwear (makasins or sandals). These things can have different colours: orange, red,
beige, white, etc.
A special glamour is to bring from Spain a bottle of wine in a special
leather wine skin. You can find Spanish castanets or fans only in Spain.

The Russian Federation
The Russian Federation is the largest country in the
world. Its total area is about 17 million square kilometres. It occupies most of Eastern Europe and Northern
Asia. Russia stretches from the Baltic Sea in the west
to the Pacific Ocean in the East and from the Arctic
Ocean in the North to the Black Sea and the Caucasus,
the Altai, and the Sayan mountains, and the Amur and

I. Read the text and underline the words and phrases given
in the Vocabulary
the Ussuri rivers in the South. It is bordered by Norway and Finland in
the north-west, Estonia, Latvia, Belarus and the Ukraine in the West,
Georgia and Azerbaijan in the south-west, and Kazakhstan, Mongolia,
China along the southern border.
The land of Russia varies from thick forests to barren deserts, from
high peaked mountains to deep valleys. The Russian Federation is located on two plains, Great Russian Plain and West Siberian Lowland. The
longest mountain chains are the Urals, separating Europe from Asia, the
Caucasus, the Altai. The most important rivers are the Volga river, flowing into the Caspian Sea, the main Siberian rivers (the Ob, the Yenisei
and the Lena), and the Amur in the Far East, flowing into the Pacific
Ocean. The total number of rivers in Russia is over two million. The
deepest lake in the world is Lake Baikal (1600 metres).
The climate varies from arctic in the north to continental in the central part of the country and subtropical in the south. The current population of Russia is about 146 million people; 80% of the population is Russians.
Russia is a highly-industrialized republic. There are a lot of mineral
resources: oil and natural gas, coal, iron, zinc, lead, nickel, aluminium,
gold and other non-ferrous metals. Russia has the world’s largest oil and
natural gas resources. Three-quarters of the mineral wealth is concentrated in Siberia and the Far East.
Approximately 10 million people are engaged in agriculture and
they produce half of the region’s grain, meat, milk and other dairy prod-
