-Within each batch, assigning system resources1 in a manner
which maximizes resource utilization, i.e. balancing workloads;
-Responding to changes in upper-level production plans с material
availability.
All software decision aids typically reside on the FMS computer,
or if this not feasible, then on a DSS computer.
FMS Level-3
Operations deal with the real-time operation of the FMS. The
functional areas involved are:
-Work-order scheduling and dispatching (which part to introduce
next into the FMS, and when);
-Movement of workpieces and material handling system (which
machine to send this workpiece to next, which cart to sent to pick up this
workpiece, etc.);
-Data distribution;
-Tool management;
-System monitoring and diagnostics;
-Reacting to disruptions (failures if one or more system
components, sudden changes in production requirements).
During normal system operation, most of these decisions are made
by software in the FMS computer and/or MHS computer. However, when
failure of a machine occurs, the FMS supervisor will usually take charge of
the decision making. The FMS supervisor's task can be considerably
simplified by employing various software decision aids which typically
should reside on the FMS computer to enable rapid implementation of the
changed decisions, but in some systems the architecture could involve use
of separate DSS computer as described previously.

the system is to be constructed.
2. Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) represent a new strategy to
increase labour productivity.
3. The FMS is known to provide a direct hardware/software solution to
many economic and technical problems.

device.
5. Fixtures are used to hold a part.
6. The part is found to be a workpiece processed by a flexible
manufacturing system.
7. The FMS is designed to machine more than one part number at low to
medium volume levels.
CONTROL TEXT:
« FAMOUS SCIENTISTS:
KONSTANTIN KONSTANTINOVICH KHRENOV»
Konstantin Konstantinovich Khrenov was a Soviet engineer and
inventor who in 1932 introduced underwater welding and cutting of metals.
Khrenov dedicated his entire career to the development of welding

103
techniques and equipment. He invented methods of electric welding and
cutting metals under water, designed power sources for arc and spot
welding, ceramic fluxes, electrode coatings, methods of cold pressure
welding, diffusion welding, plasma cutting and many others. His
breakthrough achievement was development of the electrodes for
underwater welding in 1932. Their successful test at the Black Sea in the
same year was the first practical realization of underwater welding. In this
method, the gas bubbles formed as a result of welding reactions were
generating a stable flow which shielded the arc from water. Underwater
welding had quickly found practical application and already in 1936–1938
was used in the lifting of the ship Boris sunk in the Black Sea, as well as in
the repair of bridges and other ships, especially during World War II. For
this method, extensively used by the Soviet Navy during World War II,
Khrenov was awarded the State Stalin Prize in 1946.
