My friend lives in a new district of St. Petersburg. He has got a 3-room flat.
There is much built-in furniture in it. My friend's flat is on the twelfth floor of a beautiful block of flats. There is a sitting-room, a bedroom and a study in my friend's flat.
The sitting-room is light and sunny. There are 2 windows in it. In his sittingroom my friend has got a sofa, a standard lamp, two armchairs and a coffee table.
There are two wall-lamps above the sofa. A new carpet on the floor makes the room
comfortable.
My friend likes to spend evening hours in his study. It is a lovely room. There
are many book-shelves on the walls. My friend knows some foreign languages and
there are many English, German and French books on the book-shelves.
In the evening my friend and his family like to sit in the hall and read books,
watch TV or VCR. Sometimes they listen to records on the stereo equipment.
There is much modern kitchen equipment in my friend's kitchen. There is a
dishwasher to wash all the dishes: plates, glasses, knives, forks & spoons. There are
two freezers in his refrigerator and an electric cooker.

The Semenovs often stay at home in the evenings and watch television or VCR, especially
when it is cold and wet outside, but sometimes they go to the cinema.
They like a good love story or a musical, a thriller, a comedy or a detective

Last night the Semenovs went to the cinema, too. A screen version of a very
popular novel was on. They bought two tickets. The cinema was full. The Semenovs
liked the film very much because it was close to the original and there were good actors in it. Their favourite actor starred in it. He played one of the leading parts.
There was a newsreel in the programme too. It gave the latest political events
from different countries.
The programme began at 7.30 and lasted three hours because it was a two-part film.
There was no interval between the newsreel and the feature film. The Semenovs watched the
programme with pleasure, but they were very tired when they came home.

models. They do much business with British, German and French companies. There

The engineers of Rosimport know Blake & Sons are selling this model now. Their
plants have just started producing it and they have already received a lot of orders from
many countries. The model is of high quality and meets the customers' requirements.
This week Belov's office has received an offer from Blake & Sons. The employees
have studied it closely. Rosimport wants to buy 20 machines. They would like to have
them in July-August this year. Belov's office invites Mr. Brown, the company manager, to
come to Moscow to discuss prices, terms of payment, shipment and delivery. Belov and
his friends expect to make a good contract with Blake & Sons, that's why they made a
draft contract and discussed it with their Chief Accountant.

Sochi is a beautiful seaside resort in the Caucasus. Every summer many people
come to Sochi to spend their holidays there. There are a lot of three-star hotels &
some five-star hotels there. Accommodation there is very comfortable, but expensive.
There are some boarding-houses in Sochi too. Accommodation in boarding-houses
and especially at caravan & camping sites is not expensive and many families enjoy
spending their holiday in their caravans or in tents at camping sites.
It is always a pleasure to spend a month in Sochi, especially in the summer season. In early spring and late autumn it is warm there, but in June, July and August it
is hot in Sochi. At this time of the year people spend much time on the beach. They
swim and sunbathe a lot and get a very good suntan. Some people usually have a
good time in the Caucasus. But still many other holiday-makers prefer package tours
to foreign countries and teen-agers usually go on walking tours or go hitch-hiking
from place to place.

him a discount. A 5% discount suited the Buyer.

Not long ago my friend went on a business trip to Great Britain. He arrived at
Sheremetyevo Airport an hour before the take off time. It took him 10 or 15 minutes
to go through passport control and through the customs as his passport was in order
and he had no things liable to duty. The plane took off and set its course for London.
Three and a half hours later the plane landed at London Airport. Borisov of the Russian Trade Delegation met my friend and took him to a 5-star hotel. Its name is the
Gariston Hotel. There are all modern facilities there. In each room there is a mini-bar,
an air conditioner and a private bath with a shower. This hotel is close to the centre of
the city. On the way to the hotel many things impressed my friend, especially lefthand traffic and red London buses (double-deckers). At the hotel my friend asked the
receptionist if he needed to fill in the form. My friend wrote down his name, address
and citizenship in it. After that the receptionist told him that the maid would give him
the key to his room and the porter had already taken my friend's things to his room in
the lift. It was a single room with a balcony. My friend enjoyed his stay at the hotel.
The next morning my friend went to the post-office, bought some envelopes and
stamps for regular and airmail and sent some letters to his relatives and friends in
Moscow.

Many new districts and wonderful buildings have appeared in Moscow lately.

traffic is heavy, especially in the centre. So it usually takes much time to get to the
centre by car.
Moscow underground is famous all over the world, because it's the most beautiful one. Its stations are modern and bright. Travellers who come to Moscow enjoy
their stay in our capital. There is much to see in Moscow and they can always find
new sight: which impress them.

Half a year ago we had very- important talks with Brown and Co. The representatives of our company arrived in London to place an order with them for Machines Model AE5-80.
We required the machines for the plant which is under construction now. As

During the first talks we discussed delivery dates, terms of shipment and terms
of delivery. We were interested in buying 150 machines and required them urgently.
As their company was heavy with orders they offered us to take part deliveries. They
could offer only 50 machines for immediate shipment and agreed to deliver the balance of 100 machines in four lots of 25 machines each at regular intervals within 8 months.
So their representatives asked us if it would suit us and we answered that it would.
As Brown & Co. could provide their own shipping facilities we agreed to part
deliveries on GIF terms. They could guarantee no delay in shipment. So we signed
the contract and our representatives left for Moscow the next day. In Moscow our
Managing Director asked us if we had made the contract. When he heard that we had
agreed to take part deliveries he quietly said that we should discuss this matter with
him in detail and he would think if we could do something else. But when he understood, that there was nothing else to do, he accepted the terms of the contract.

Last Saturday I went to the Bolshoi. This theatre is famous for its operas and
ballet performances with the best Russian singers, ballerinas and ballet dancers.
I went to hear the opera "Boris Godunov". The cast of the actors who performed in the opera was excellent. I was 15 minutes late and when I entered the
house a famous singer was singing the part of Boris. His performance was extremely
convincing and dramatic. There was a lot of feeling in the performance. When the
opera was over there were a lot of curtain calls for him. The opera impressed me
greatly. I was very excited.
There are a lot of places in Moscow where theatre-goers can enjoy drama performances, folk song concerts or concerts of pop music. Everywhere you can see a lot
of programmes with the most popular actors and actresses.
Every year a lot of Russian people and foreign visitors come to Moscow to enjoy great art of Russian actors. But very often it's almost impossible to buy tickets at
the theatre booking offices especially if you want to have seats in the stalls or in the
dress circle. That's why it is better to book seats in advance.
Next month I'm going to the Art Theatre to see the famous classical play "Mary
Stuart", where some stars of Russian stage are playing.

business with this company before they decided to place a trial order with them. Our

in London couldn't make a transaction as the Sellers had quoted too high a price. But
Mr. Brown thought their price was quite reasonable as it included export packing. He
also stressed that they had improved the model. Brown & Co. could give Rosimport a
2 percent discount off the value of the goods if they bought 3 pumps. That settled the
price problem. Both partners were satisfied with their transaction.
Payment by a Letter of Credit was acceptable to Rosimport. The Buyers were
to open it against the Notification of the Readiness of the goods for shipment &
against other shipping documents with one of British Banks. Now Brown & Co. are
looking forward to establishing regular business relations with Rosimport.

Several days ago Mr. Borisov, the Managing director of a big Moscow company was to go from Moscow to St. Petersburg on business. Borisov chose one of them and bought a return second-class ticket. He booked a lower berth. There were 45 minutes left before the train's departure. This train was due to

his suit-case on the luggage-rack. There was a buffet-car on the train and Borisov was
very glad because he hadn't taken anything to eat with him. The next morning he
woke up at half past five a.m. and his working day began. He was to visit the Transformer plant. The plant produced transformers of high capacity for different applications. They had been exchanging correspondence with the production manager of the
plant for two months and he had made all the arrangements for their visit.

The production manager of the plant showed him round the whole plant so that
Borisov could get a good idea of the range of their products. The production manager
led the way. They visited the assembly shop and the test department. The production
manager showed Borisov how thoroughly they were testing every transformer. He
explained that they had modified the latest model of a very high capacity, which became easier to operate and more reliable as compared with the previous model.
While they were looking through the drawings the production manager answered all the queries about the new model. He said that they had good reports from
customers both in Russia and aboard. Borisov was delighted by his visit and made a
big transaction with the management of the plant for the purchase of this latest model
of transformers.

International fairs and exhibitions are very useful, they pave the way for consolidation of friendship among countries and nations.
