университета, обучающихся по направлению подготовки 45.03.02 «Лингвистика»,

ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ
Данное пособие предназначено для студентов 1-го курса направле
ния подготовки 45.03.02 «Лингвистика», профили «Теория и практика перевода», «Теория и методика преподавания иностранных языков
и культур». Цель учебно-методического пособия – помочь читающему
художественные произведения на языке оригинала научится работать
с текстом не только для понимания содержания, но и для извлечения
лингвистической информации путем проработки лексических единиц
и конструкций, а также научиться анализировать, сравнивать и сопоставлять лексику с родным языком, что способствует лучшему пониманию студентом текста произведения, обогащению его речи. Кроме
того, пособие направлено на развитие навыков критического мышления,
говорения и письменной речи.
Пособие начинается с кратких сведений о жизни и творчестве автора,
затем следует основная часть, состоящая из 8 частей, каждая из которых
включает в себя:
словарную работу;
работу с лексическими единицами;
задания на проверку смыслового понимания текста;
задания для развития понимания идиоматических конструкций;
задания на анализ отдельных наиболее часто встречающихся
в данном тексте грамматических конструкций;
задания на развитие письменной речи;
задания на совершенствование умений подготовленной моноло-
гической и диалогической речи;
творческие задания, направленные на формирование креатив-
ного мышления и совершенствование речевых умений.
Пособие соответствует предметно-тематическому содержанию курса
дисциплины «Иностранный язык (Практический курс первого иностранного языка)».
Самостоятельное (домашнее) чтение студентов способствует расширению их словарного запаса, развитию идиоматической речи, учит
работе с контекстными словарями, а также позволяет развивать навыки
смыслового восприятия текстов и анализировать стилистические приемы
путем сопоставления с русским языком.
Письменные задания направлены на развитие навыка письменной
речевой деятельности и умения анализировать произведение, героев,
содержание романа.

Read the information about the author of The Great Gatsby and answer

F. Scott Fitzgerald, (born Sept. 24, 1896, St. Paul, Minn., U.S. – died Dec.
21, 1940, Hollywood, Calif.), U.S. novelist and short-story writer. Fitzgerald
attended Princeton University but dropped out with bad grades. In 1920 he
married Zelda Sayre (1900–48), daughter of a respected Alabama judge. His
works, including the early novels This Side of Paradise (1920) and The Beautiful
and Damned (1922) and the story collections Tales of the Jazz Age (1922) and
All the Sad Young Men (1926), capture the Jazz Age’s vulgarity and dazzling
promise. His brilliant The Great Gatsby (1925; film, 1926, 1949, 1974; TV movie
2001), a story of American wealth and corruption, was eventually acclaimed
one of the century’s greatest novels. In 1924 Scott and Zelda became part of the
expatriate community on the French Riviera, the setting of Tender Is the Night
(1934; film, 1962). His fame and prosperity proved disorienting to them both,
and he became seriously alcoholic. Zelda never fully recovered from a mental

breakdown in 1932 and spent most of her remaining years in a sanitarium.
In 1937 Scott moved to Hollywood to write film scripts; the experience inspired
the unfinished The Last Tycoon (1941; film, 1976). He died of a heart attack
at age 44.
F. Scott Fitzgerald is considered one of the great 20th-century American
writers and is famous for his depictions of the rich, disenchanted youth of what
he called the Jazz Age during the 1920s. He completed four novels and more
than 150 short stories. He is best known for his third novel, The Great Gatsby,
published in 1925. The Great Gatsby has often been called “the great American
novel”.
Widely considered his greatest work, The Great Gatsby is set in the Jazz
Age, a term popularized by Fitzgerald. It captures the prosperity of a postwar
America, filled with jazz music and illegal alcohol. A story about the promise and
failure of the American Dream, it centers around the character of Jay Gatsby,
a young man who rises from rags to riches, and his love for a wealthy young
woman. The book was unsuccessful when it was first published. Reviews were
mixed, and the first printing sold slowly. The novel, however, was rediscovered
a few years after Fitzgerald died and grew in popularity, becoming a standard text
of high school curricula. It is now considered a masterpiece of American fiction.
Several film adaptations have been made of the book, most notably a production
directed by Jack Clayton in 1974, starring Robert Redford as Gatsby, and one in
2013 directed by Baz Luhrmann, starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role.
