1. Cellular Components
Higher animals have multiple organs to perform specific
functions.
Organs are made-up of different types of tissues.
Tissue is made-up of a group of cells that are similar in
function.
The cell is the structural and functional unit of life and
it contains all necessary infrastructures to perform all
functions. Based on cellular structure, cells are classified
as prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
The cells of the living kingdom may be divided into two
categories:
A. Prokaryotes (Greek: pro— before; karyon—nucleus)
lack a well-defined nucleus and possess relatively
simple structure. These include various bacteria.
B. Eukaryotes (Greek: eu—true; karyon—nucleus) have
a well-defined nucleus and are more complicated
structurally and functionally as compared to
prokaryotes.
The higher organisms (animals and plants) are composed
of eukaryotic cells.

Structure of prokaryotic cells
Simple and small as compared to eukaryotic cells.
Membrane-bound organelles are absent including the
nucleus.
Outer flagella:
It is attached to the bacterial capsule in motile bacteria.
Chemotaxis: Movement of bacteria towards a chemical.
The flagellum is a part of bacterial cell wall and its
movement is controlled by motor protein.
Flagella motion is an active process that required energy
in the form of ATP.
Cytosol and other organelles
There are no membrane-bound organelles in prokaryotic
cells. Organelles such as ribosomes (70S) and genetic
material are found in the cytosol, and electron transport
chain units are located in the plasma membrane.
Prokaryotic cells possess genetic material in the form of
chromosomal DNA ( on their chromosomes) and extrachromosomal DNA (as plasmids).
The genes present on chromosome does not contain non-
coding region (introns) and it is co-translated to protein.
Eukaryotic cells
Has more complex structure and functions as compared
to prokaryotes and it contains many membrane-bound
organelles to perform important vital functions.
It contains a double membrane-bounded nucleus
separated from cytosol.
