Другие ученые заявляют, что в тантре издавна было принято выставлять на всеобщее обозрение более «пристойный» вариант практики, скрывая тайное учение. Об этом говорится в книге Хью Б. Урбана Tantra: Sex, Secrecy, Politics, and Power in the Study of Religion (Berkeley: University of California, 2003), с.134—64. Одно ясно: в многочисленных тантрических текстах подробно описаны сексуальные акты, как традиционные, так и групповые.

Хотя представители «популярной йоги», как правило, избегают любых упоминаний о тантрических истоках хатха-йоги, ученые открыто признают эту связь. Об этом можно прочесть, к примеру, в книге Мирча Элиаде «Йога: бессмертие и свобода» (Eliade, Mircea. Yoga: Immortality and Freedom. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1990, с.227—36), а также в «Гхеранда-самхи- те» в переводе Джеймса Мэллинсона (Woodstock, New York: YogaVidya.com, 2004) c. xiv).

«Хатха» означает «насилие» или «силу»...

Это определение приводится в словаре санскрита МоньеВильямса (Monier-Williams, A Sanskrit-English Dictionary (New Delhi: Asian educational Services, 1999), на с. 1287). Поэтика санскрита также позволяет этимологически разбить это слово на два корня — «ха» и «тха», «солнце» и «луна». В современной интерпретации часто приводится именно эта этимология, как и у «отца

Однако в научных кругах, как правило, предпочитают буквальный перевод; хатха-йо- га в этой интерпретации означает «насильственный союз».
