What to do about jet-lag

How can you be efficient, dynamic, and convince your business partners that your products are wonderful? You have a headache, you are half asleep, and you feel terrible. How can you live with the difference between your time and local time?

Jet-lag is the traveller's worst enemy. Can you do anything about it? Some people think you can. You can spend a lot of money on books and products designed to help with the problem. They have names like 'Jet-lag combat kit', or 'Beating the travel clock'. But the advice of most specialists is simple. Adapt to the new time from the moment you leave home. Change your watch before take-off. Relax, and drink plenty of water. Do not drink coffee, alcohol or other stimulants, and do not take sleeping pills. Eat highprotein foods (meat, fish, etc.) before midday, and high-carbohydrate foods (bread, pasta and rice) after midday. Try to take a few short naps. Follow this advice, and go to that meeting in top form.

The magic of Tasmania

Think of Australia and you can forget Tasmania quite easily. It is a tiny dot on the map below Victoria, on the east side. Perhaps this is the reason that travellers do not visit the island in large numbers. But Tasmania has a lot to offer the tourist. It has amazing, tall mountains. There are extraordinary trees which go straight up into the sky. And there are strange and wonderful animals that do not exist anywhere else in the world. It is paradise, and in fact names like Paradise and Promised Land are actually the names of two small villages. The village of Paradise is not sophisticated. There are no shops, no schools, no post office and not even a pub. But the seventy inhabitants are very happy with their quiet lives.

Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, is only one hour from Sydney by air. It is very easy to include it in a trip to Australia, but not many people think of visiting the island. If you go there, be prepared for old-world charm. Many of the hotels are beautiful nineteenthand early twentieth-century buildings. The Tasmanian Tourist Board calls the hotels Colonial Accommodation. The owners are very friendly, and it is almost like staying in somebody's home.

One fifth of the island is classified as a World Heritage Area. This means there are vast areas of virgin forest where the extraordinary wildlife lives freely. So if you like natural beauty and a quality of life that the busy tourist areas can no longer give, Tasmania is an essential stop on your next trip to Australia.
