2. THE TOURISM INDUSTRY
tourism industry
Term to describe firms and establishments providing attractions, facilities and services for tourists. Economic activities are normally grouped into industries according to their products. As tourists use a range of attractions, facilities and services, they are customers of a number of industries as conventionally defined. Those significantly dependent on tourists for their business, such as hotels and tour operators, are sometimes called tourism-related industries. To the extent towhich they supply tourist rather than local and neighbourhood markets, they make up a tourism industry, that part of the economy which has a common function of meeting tourist needs.

World Tourism Organization (WTO)
Inter-governmental organization established 1975 as a UN specialized agency, when it replaced the non-governmental International Union of Official Travel Organizations (IUOTO), founded 1925. In addition to continuing the technical work of its predecessor, WTO is concerned with tourism promotion and development worldwide. Among its main functions are monitoring trends, statistical analysis, provision of information and assistance to
authorities in planning and managing tourism in their countries. Its members include 139 countries and territories as well as over 350 affiliate members from the public and private sectors (2001).

travel/tourism to a given country by residents of other countries.
domestic travel/tourism
travel/tourism by residents of a country to other areas within the same country, as distinct from international travel/tourism.
international travel/tourism
travel/tourism between countries, i.e., foreign travel/tourism by residents of one country to, from and within other countries, as distinct from domestic travel/tourism. From the point of view of a country, international travel/tourism consists of inbound and outbound travel/tourism, e.g., in the case of France, foreign visitors to France and French residents abroad.

international tourism receipts
1.An expense incurred by inbound international visitors on goods and services and sometimes passenger items received in the country visited is referred to as international tourism receipt. These payments may include airfare, accommodation fees, shopping fee, money spent on food, and entrance fee paid for public facilities.
