Bare Boat Charter

Agreement about leasing of a ship for a long period of time when

the Charterer employs Master and crew and operates a ship himself

Bill of Lading

Legal document between the Shipper and Carrier detailing quanti-

ty, weight, dimensions, and nature of the cargo as well as condi-

tion and destination of goods to be carried

Person who employs a ship to carry particular cargo between spec-

Demurrage

agreed amount payable to the Owner for ship's delay beyond lay-

Freight Rate

Money paid by Charterer to Shipowner for carriage of one cargo

Document issued by the Master of a vessel to the charterers advis-

as well as advising a consignee or his agent that cargo has arrived

and is ready for delivery

Time Charter

Employment of ship for a round trip voyage for a stated period of

time

Ship's Agent

Owners' Representative who carries out customs formalities, ar-

ranges for pilots, tugs and berthing, orders bunkers, settles ac-

counts

Shipowner

Person who looks after the manning and management of a ship,

supplying the necessary navigation equipment to guarantee her full

seaworthiness and safety at sea, and is involved, on his own, both

in the exercise of navigation and in the commercial exploitation of

the ship

cargo interests on the other. His job is to act as forwarding agent

or custom broker, fixing of charters, and acting as chartering agent

time window within which the shipowner must tender notice of

readiness to the charterer that the ship has arrived at the port of

loading and is ready to load and the charterers are obliged to ac-

cept the vessel in that port
