ARPA (automatic radar plotting |
Bridge navigational equipment constantly monitors the |
aid) |
ship's surrounding and automatically acquires the num- |
ber of targets, ships, boats, stationary or floating objects |
etc., and plots their speeds and courses respectively |

Is used when a ship has to steer her steady course for a |
long period of time without deviation |

Navigation of the ship through restricted waters in low |
visibility without visual observation of objects outside |
the ship; all available non-visual aids are employed |

is being steered; the direction of travel through the water |
Cross track distance (XTD) |
Specified limit for deviations from the planned track |
Dead reckoning (DR) |
Process of calculating current position of the ship by us- |
ing a previously determined position and then incorporat- |
ing estimations of speed, heading direction and course |
over time travelled |
Follow up mode |
Rudder follows the wheel and remains in that position |
until the wheel changes its position |
Heading |
Compass direction in which a vessel's bow is pointed |
Manoeuvering |
Term used to describe the process by which a ship's |
movement is controlled when in close proximity to other |
ships and objects at sea or as it approaches or exits a |
country's coastal waters, or arrives at or departs from a |
port's berth or dock |

turning/course-changing ability, yaw-checking ability, |
turning ability, stopping ability |

Bridge Procedure Guide terms |
Definition |
Non-Follow Up Mode |
Mode of steering is not done with a steering wheel but |
with a lever. As long as it is kept pressed, the rudder will |
continue turning and stop the moment the lever is re- |
leased |
OOW |
Master's Representative who is responsible for the safe |
navigation of the ship |
Parallel indexing (PI) |
Technique used as a measure to monitor the progress of a |
vessel on the track and to minimize the cross-track dis- |
tance and to keep vessel at a safe distance from the |
shoreline or rock |
Pivot Point |
Central point on a vessel which remains fixed as the bow |
and stern swing around it. Fixed is not really correct, be- |
cause it moves forward or aft as the vessel moves |
through the water |
Rate of turn indicator |
indicates the rate a ship is turning in degrees per minute |
(°/min). It is one of the most important instruments a |
helmsman can have when steering a course |
Relative motion |
Mode of radar when own ship is fixed at the center of |
display screen |
Rudder angle indicator |
Device used to indicate the present position of the rudder |
blade, usually fitted near the ship's wheel on the bridge |
and in the engine control room |
Safe speed |
Speed less than the maximum at which the operator can |
take proper and affective action to avoid collision and |
stop within a distance appropriate to the prevailing cir- |
cumstances and conditions |
Speed made good (SMG) |
Actual average speed in knots which was maintained in |
proceeding along the intended track to the final destina- |
tion or intermediate point |
Squat |
Decrease in ship under keel clearance due to vessel's |
movement in the shallow water |
Steering gear |
provides a movement of the rudder in response to a sig- |
nal from the bridge |
Track |
Course which a vessel makes good over ground, after |
allowing for the effect of currents, tidal streams, and |
leeway caused by wind and sea |

Circle around your vessel on the radar to check and mon- |
itor the distance to other objects around you |
