COLREGS Rule 3
Sailing vessel
Vessel engaged in fishing
Vessel NUC
Hampered vessel/vessel RAM
Operations which restrict the vessels in their ability to manoeuvre:
Vessel constrained by her draft (CBD)
Underway
to be in sight of one another
Restricted visibility
Meaning
means any vessel under sail provided that propelling machinery, if fitted, is not being used
means any vessel fishing with nets, lines, trawls or other fishing apparatus which restrict manoeuvrability, but does not include a vessel fishing with trolling lines or other fishing apparatus which do not restrict manoeuvrability
Term “vessel not under command” means a vessel which through some exceptional circumstance is unable to manoeuvre as required by these Rules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel.
Term “vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre” means a vessel which from the nature of her work is restricted in her ability to manoeuvre as required by these Rules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel
-vessel engaged in laying, servicing or picking up a navigation mark, submarine cable or pipeline
-vessel engaged in dredging, surveying or underwater operations
-vessel engaged in replenishment or transferring persons, provisions, or cargo while underway
-vessel engaged in the launching or recovery of aircraft
-vessel engaged in mine clearance operations
-vessel engaged in towing operations such as severely restrict the towing vessel and her tow in their ability to deviate from their course
Power-driven vessel which, because of her draught in relation to the available depth and width of navigable water, is severely restricted in her ability to deviate from the course she is following means that a vessel is not at anchor, or made fast to the shore, or aground
Vessels shall be deemed to be in sight of one another only when one can be observed visually from the other
Any condition in which visibility is restricted by fog, mist, falling snow, heavy rainstorms, sandstorms or any other similar causes

UNIT 11. AIDS TO NAVIGATION (ATONS)
Aids to Navigation (AtoN’s) or Navigational Aids (NavAids) are any sort of navigation mark, signal, or guidance, (fixed or floating) which aids in marine navigation and the safe passage of a vessel when in confined or dangerous waters. They include lighthouses, beacons, and buoys, all of which are strategically placed along coastlines and shipping routes. They are specifically intended to assist the navigator in determining their position, a safe course to travel, or to warn them of dangers or obstructions. They include visible, audible and electronic aids established by governments and private authorities for these purposes.

Aid to navigation |
An object or device, external to a vessel that is intended to assist a |
|
(ATON) |
navigator to fix ship’s position, determine safe course and to warn |
|
|
him of hazards to navigation. They are both fixed and floating ob- |

jects such as lights, light ships, buoys, day beacons, and fog signals, |
|
|
plus electronic aids to navigation such as radio beacons |
|
Beacon |
A lighted or unlighted fixed aid to navigation attached directly to |
|
|
the Earth’s surface. Lights and day beacons both constitute beacons |
|
Buoy |
A floating object of defined shape and colour, which is anchored in |
|
|
a given position and serves as an aid to navigation |
|
Lighthouse |
Generally, a tower, building, or other structure that is built onshore |
