JOB HUNTING

Getting a job is a problem which every person earlier or later faces. We spend great part of our life at our job, so choosing a right business career is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life.

The job search may take a while, but with the simple steps you will find that job that suits you. There are many ways to get your job. The first place where you can ask for a job is the organization where you are undergoing practical training. Another thing you can always do is to make a list of companies which need your kind of skills and just send them your CV. You can also go to a personnel or employment agencies. Many employment agencies deal with employers and handle temporary and permanent jobs that’s why they have more information on possible vacancies and they list jobs.

One of the few places to find a job is the Internet also known as the world wide web. Go on the world wide web and type in wanted jobs in any major search engine, or the specific job that you are looking for, and you will come up with many results.

Then you should check the newspapers, job boards, company career sites, and other sources of job postings where the employers advertise for job vacancies. You may examine their advertisements and if you are interested in one, you are to replay to it applying for a job.

You can use newspapers and Internet in order to put your advertising called mini resume. Usually this mini resume is published online on employer’s websites or it is advertized in the newspapers. Composing your mini resume try to write only necessary information, tell about your education, experience, additional knowledge and skills in a few words.

One of crucial steps to getting a job is actually to talk to any trustworthy person you are friends or acquaintances with. You may ask your friends

67

and relatives for help. As weird as this may sound employers generally hire people they know, first and people sent to them from people they know, second. In fact, it has been suggested as many as five of every ten positions are filled through personal contacts.

Also, keep in mind that if you know of a friend who works in a field that you are interested in, talk to him. He can usually help you out in your search, and possibly get you a job, or a career that you will love and enjoy.

Recruitment

The process of finding people for particular jobs is recruitment (Am.E.: hiring). Someone who has been recruited is a recruit (Am.E.: a hire). The company employs or hires them; they join the company. A company may recruit employees directly or use outside recruiters, recruitment agencies or employment agencies. Outside specialists called headhunters may be called on to headhunt people for very important jobs, persuading them to leave the organizations they already work for. This process is called headhunting.

Applying for a job

The most important rule to remember when applying for a job is to follow the directions. If the employer tells you to apply in person, don't call. If the job posting says to mail your resume, do not send it via email. After you have found some jobs that interest you, the next step is to apply for them and to prepare thoroughly for the entire hiring process, so you can pass the interview and receive a job offer. Many potential employers require completing an application form and submitting a CV / resume and a covering letter (Am. E.: cover letter). Later an applicant will need to go on an interview to meet with an employer face to face. An application form contains information on a candidate's education, work experience and skills. Often, your application form is the only information your potential employer has about you, so it should be complete, correct (no errors) and accurate. It needs to tell them clearly what makes you suitable for the job vacancy. A CV/ resume is a summary of educational background, work experience, and accomplishments, as well as research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, and other details. The primary differences between a resume and a CV are the length, what is included and what each is used for. A resume is brief and concise – no more than a page or two, a Curriculum Vitae is a longer and more detailed summary. A resume emphasizes information on the experience, abilities and studies

68

relevant for the objectives that must be fulfilled in a certain position for which you are applying. A CV is a compilation of all the academic data and experience of a person throughout his/her life. It's important to include all your contact information in your CV / resume, so employers can easily get in touch with you. The purpose of a CV / resume is to get an interview. Thus, your CV / resume needs to be perfect and persuasive to impress the hiring manager. A job interview is one of the most important parts of your job search. An interview is a formal discussion, in which an employer assesses an applicant for a job. Once you have been selected for a job interview, it's important to prepare properly. That means practicing interview questions and answers, dressing in appropriate interview clothes. After an interview, it is advantageous to send a thank-you note. This helps establish a relationship with the recruiter, shows interest in the position, and indicates personal responsibility. The first interview may be followed up with the second round. From there it is a short wait until the company calls back with their offer, or mails a rejection. Thus, it is evident that getting a job depends on many factors such as an impressive application form, a well-done CV / resume and a job interview.

Selection procedures

Dagmar Schmidt is the head of recruitment at a German finance company. She talks about the selection process, the methods that the company uses to recruit people:

We advertise in national newspapers. We look at the backgrounds of applicants; their experience of different jobs and their educational qualifications. We don’t ask for handwritten letters of application as people usually apply by email.

We invite the most interesting candidates to a group discussion. Then we have individual interviews with each candidate. We also ask the candidates to do written psychometric tests to assess their intelligence and personality.

After this, we shortlist three of four candidates. We check their references by writing to their referees: previous employers or teachers that candidates have named in their applications. If the references are OK, we ask the candidates to come back for more interviews. Finally, we offer the job to someone, and if they turn it down we have to think again. If they accept it, we hire them. We only appoint someone if we find the right person.’
