PART-TIME JOBS OR FULL-TIME HOLIDAY JOBS?

Many young people are not satisfied with the status of their parents’ freeloaders or spongers. It is really cool and boosting youngsters’ self-esteem to buy clothes and gadgets, purchase a little sweet present for a girlfriend or a boyfriend, pay for an exciting trip, or just save money for something substantial – using your personal means. The question of job naturally arises. The following text reveals some merits and weak points of Holiday jobs (for a few summer months) and Part-time jobs (visiting the working place for a few hours every day or according to some schedule all the year round)

“You’re working your way through university or college, and the question of your personal means becomes urgent… The last thing you want to do is to get a job that requires lots of time and will affect your studies. Although part-time jobs are popular and fairly easy to come by, there is the possibility that it will affect both your studies and your socializing. There is nothing worse than having to work on a Friday night when all your mates are ready to go out and have some fun. OK, so there are problems with part-time jobs-but what are your other options? Holiday jobs could be” (17) a good alternative.

“With some full-time work over a few weeks you could save enough money to support you a few extra months when you go back to your college or university.

a)Opportunity to get some work experience – if you are with a big company that has permanent vacancies available, they may ask you to come back after your graduating from the university.

b)Opportunity to build up your CV – holiday jobs allow you to show a potential employer that you have had experience and have gained an idea of that industry” (17), besides – you can inform your future employer that you have obtained the professional knowledge which is relevant for your new position.

c)“Frequently a full-time holiday job will provide a weekly or monthly wage. This could easily work out better than an hourly part-time job rate” (17) – the insignificant money is easy to waste while seeing bigger amount of money can inspire you to save and accumulate it.

d)Again the question of money. Ok, you may spend more hours at work, but full-time holiday jobs provide considerably higher wages than part-time jobs!

“Part-time Job Benefits

a)One of the greatest advantages of a part-time job is that it doesn’t take over your life. A couple of evening shifts a week leaves you a lot of time to do everything you want” (17) at your leisure time.

b)Sometimes you can enjoy tips and bonuses. Imagine: you are a baby-sitter working two evenings a week when the mommy goes shopping. Free biscuits and juice (probably – some other food) are yours! The same works well when you are a cleaner in a cafe or a coat-check guy.

c)You will not completely lose your holidays! Your working hours will be spread and cover either holidays or the academic term.

d)They say (but it should be checked) that “part-timers have the same legal rights as full-timers” (17). It means that employers can not discriminate against you for working only a few hours a week. You deserve a holiday pay and a sick pay. All these aspects should be officially discussed with the employer beforehand to avoid disappointment.

1)Некоторым людям не хватает инициативы. Они не склонны работать самостоятельно, им нужно руководство.
