Learn more types of establishments

In eating establishments we can buy food. Learn more about some of them Bistro – Originating in Paris, bistros are small neighborhood restaurants, usually specializing in (but not limited to) French home-style cooking. They mostly serve

simple, reasonably priced meals in a cozy, casual setting.

Ethnic restaurant – This style of eatery specializes in a cuisine related to a particular nationality, using ingredients and cooking techniques that belong to that specific culture. Among the most widespread are Chinese, Greek, Italian, and Mexican. The majority of ethnic restaurants are independently owned and situated in big cities or areas with vibrant immigrant communities.

Fine dining restaurant – The highest rated type of restaurant, often characterized by elaborate (and horribly expensive) menus, attentive service, and sophisticated decor with crisp white tablecloths, starched napkins, candles, bunches of orchids etc. Such restaurants are exclusively designed. These upmarket full-service restaurants cater to a wealthy clientele, sometimes requiring formal dress code and reservation in advance. The staff are well trained: when it is necessary they show the complete gratification at seeing the client creating a family-like atmosphere, but when the visitors sink into the process of eating or romantic conversation the staff become

“invisible” without stopping the service. Of course, waiters working in such restaurants are well-to-do people because they always enjoy generous tips. Sometimes fine

dining restaurants provide exquisite concerts of well-known performers, but when the client wants to enjoy privacy he can find it in a special cabin where no sound will disturb him. Anything for your money!

Trattoria – Rather informal family-run Italian establishment offering plain food typical of rural areas, popular with tourists who are eager to enjoy local Italian cuisine.

Drive-in restaurant – Though not so popular nowadays, drive-in restaurants refer to classic American establishments where customers order and eat their food while sitting in their cars.

Drive-through restaurant – Slightly different than a drive-in, a drive-through or drive-through restaurant allows clients to place the order at a microphone, and then drive to a window where they pay and receive their food. Major fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King often offer drive-through service.

Pizzeria – As you would have thought, a pizzeria is an establishment where pizza is baked and served. In Italy, where they originate, you’ll find two different types of pizzerias – one is a traditional sit-down restaurant, which may also serve wine, salads, and pasta dishes; and the other one, born in Rome, is some sort of bakery or take away joint selling pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice). Established in 1830, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba in Naples is widely regarded as the world’s first pizzeria.

Cafe – Ranging from casual neighborhood hangouts to trendy establishments, the cafe is probably the most common eating establishment out there. Also known as coffeehouse or coffee shop, it first appeared in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) in the 17th century, and has served as a social gathering place ever since. While focusing on coffee and other hot beverages, frequently they also offer pastries, cakes, and other light meals/snacks. The menu varies greatly from country to country.

Diner – A casual sit-down American restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Taking inspiration from the old rail dining cars, their typical retro design often includes neon lights, leather clad booths, and long counters running the length of the interior; as for opening hours, burgers, sandwiches and pies are available in diners round the clock.

Teahouse – While teahouses are primarily places to drink tea, some of them also serve light meals typical to the local tea culture. You’ll find tea sandwiches and small cakes in a British tea room; an assortment of pastries in a French salon de the; and noodles in a cha chaan teng (Hong Kong tea restaurant).

Fast food – Synonymous with McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and

Pizza Hut, fast food restaurants distinguish themselves through the speed of service, convenience, and affordability. They are normally part of major international chains or franchises, and feature limited, not-so-healthy menus, usually consisting of hamburgers, French fries, pizza, and soft drinks.

In the last few years, though, some fast food restaurants have begun to focus more on millennials, cutting fat and artificial ingredients, and offering higherquality options such as gourmet tacos and made-to-order pizzas. Also, a new wave of healthy fast food chains is challenging the standard high-calorie fare with quinoa bowls, fresh salads, and crispy wraps.

Cafeteria – This can be either a restaurant in its own right or an eating facility within an institution (school, hospital, workplace). In a cafeteria, there is little to no staff, so people have to serve themselves from the selection of ready-cooked food available.

Steakhouse – A restaurant specializing in grilled prime cuts of beef (strip, rib eye, tenderloin). Most of the times, the menu will also include veal, pork/lamb chops, and roasted chicken, plus good wines and a variety of side dishes.

Eating Establishments: At Monty’s

Recently I’ve been to Chester on a business trip, it is an old town not far from Liverpool. Having observed the ruins of the ancient Roman fortress I felt as hungry as a hunter. I was walking down the main street looking for a cosy establishment to enjoy a substantial lunch. I was very surprised to run into my former class-mate Alex. I thought he had been living somewhere on the continent for many years. Alex explained that he had married and returned to England because his wife wanted her parents to help her with the newborn twins. Alex was so enthusiastic about seeing me, he offered having lunch in his favourite establishment “At Monty’s” run by his good pal. I eagerly agreed. Here is the report of my impressions for those who consider visiting Chester.

“There is a varied menu at Monty’s which includes a fantastic salad bar, a wide choice of vegetarian dishes and five types of delicious hamburgers. I tried the Mexican Sizzler – a spicy hamburger with chilly sauce in a soft, white bread roll. It was very tasty. However, it was rather cold. I also thought that Monty’s was a bit too expensive.

The Monty’s staff were helpful and polite during my visit. They looked very smart in their clean uniform. Unfortunately, the service was rather slow and one of the cashiers gave me the wrong change.

The friendly staff, good music, clean tables and comfortable seating all helped to give Monty’s an excellent atmosphere. The new no-smoking policy is also a good idea, and it made my meal at Monty’s a very pleasurable experience.

The new Monty’s restaurant in Chester is, on the whole, a great success. However, I think that the manager should make a few improvements. Firstly, he should make sure that all hot dishes are hot when they go out to customers. Secondly, he should lower the prices, as they are too high for a fast-food restaurant. Finally, he should improve staff training so that the staff work faster and make fewer mistakes” (13, c. 44). And the last but not the least – I feel a bit awkward saying that – the toilets were dirty!

TEXT 2. Online Shopping

“Online shopping is a form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to buy goods or services directly from a seller over the Internet using a web browser. Consumers find a product of interest by visiting the website of the retailer directly or by searching among alternative vendors using a shopping search engine, which displays the same product's availability and pricing at different e-retailers. Customers can shop online using a range of different computers and devices, including desktop computers, laptops, tablet computers and smartphones.

An online shop evokes the physical analogy of buying products or services at a regular "bricks-and-mortar" retailer or shopping center. A typical online store enables the customer to browse the firm's range of products and services, view photos or images of the products, along with information about the product specifications, features and prices.

Online stores typically enable shoppers to use "search" features to find specific models, brands or items. Online customers must have access to the Internet and a valid method of payment in order to complete a transaction, such as a credit card, a debit card, or a service such as PayPal” (16).

TEXT 1. MONKEY BUSINESS (By P. G.Wodehouse)

(1) Mr Mulliner looked up from his Scotch and lemon.

“Strange,” he said as the conversation in the bar had turned to the subject of physical courage, “how even in these civilized days women still admire heroism in the man. Offer them wealth, brains, looks, skill at playing the ukelele...unless these are accompanied by physical courage they will away. I was thinking of a cousin of mine, Montrose Mulliner, who had nearly lost the hand of Rosalie Beamish because of a gorilla."

“Gorilla?" said his companion, puzzled.

(2)“Yes," said Mr Mulliner. "Montrose was an assistant-director in the Motion Picture Corporation of Hollywood: and the gorilla was one of the cast of the super-film, "Black

Africa”. He would never have thought to approach its cage and look at it if Rosalie, one of the extras, had not asked him to do so. As they were engaged to be married her word of course, was law; so he accompanied Rosalie to the animal's head-quarters.

(3)This is how it was.

Arriving at the cage, they found Captain Jack Fosdyke there poking at the gorilla with a stick. He was engaged to supervise the production of "Black Africa”. As they came up the Captain turned and Montrose did not like the impudent look in the eye which he turned at Rosalie.

“Ah, there, girlie," said the Captain. "Come to see the monkey?”

Rosalie was staring open-mouthed through the bars.

“Doesn’t it look fierce!" she cried.

Captain Jack Fosdyke laughed carelessly.

(4)"If you had led the rough, every-man-for-himself life I have, you wouldn't be frightened of gorillas. I remember once in Equatorial Africa I was strolling along with my elephant gun and a couple of monkeys dropped out of a tree behaving as if the place belonged to them. I soon put a stop to that. Bang, bang, left and right, and two more skins for my collection. Dining anywhere tonight, girlie?"

(5)"I'm dining with Mr Mulliner. This is Mr Mulliner.”

“Oh, that?" said the Captain, scrutinizing Montrose as if he had just dropped out of a tree before him. "Well, some time, eh?" he said and walked away.

“Isn't he wonderful!" she said. "Captain Fosdyke, I mean. So splendid and strong." “Yes", said Montrose coldly.

Montrose was uneasy. There had been a gleam in Rosalie’s eyes as she spoke of Captain Fosdyke which he had noticed with concern. He decided to consult his friend, George Pybus, of the Press department, on the matter.

George Pybus listened to his story with interest and said: There's no getting away from it, girls do like the strong, tough man. But I will think of the matter and see how you can outshadow that fellow.

(6)And it was on the very next afternoon that Rosalie said to Montrose excitedly: "Mr Pybus came up to me and said why shouldn't you and I get married in the gorilla's cage. Isn't it a wonderful idea!" Montrose groaned in spirit. He was telling himself that he might have known that something like this would have been the result of urging a member of the Press department to exercise his intellect. The brains of members of the Press department of motion-picture studios resemble soup at a cheap restaurant. It is better not to stir them.

– Think what a sensation it would make! No more extra work for me after that. I'd get parts, and good ones. A girl can't get anywhere in this business without publicity," Rosalie said.

(7)Montrose went pale. – But don't you feel, he said, that there is something a little undignified about publicity? In my opinion, a true artist ought to be above it. Speaking for myself, said Montrose, – there is nothing I should enjoy more than a quiet wedding in a gorilla's cage. But has one the right to play to the petty tastes of a sensation-hungry public?

Rosalie was looking at him with surprise, – I believe you're frightened.

– Nothing of the kind. It is purely a question of civic conscience.

To think, said Rosalie with feeling, "that I can link my life with a man who's afraid of a petty harmless gorilla.

Montrose could not let this pass. – It is not a petty gorilla. I should say that gorilla looks very strong.

(8)"Good-bye," she said. "I see now what your socalled love is worth. If you are going to start denying me every little thing before we're married, what would you be like after? I'm glad I have discovered your true character in time. Our engagement is at an end." "But Rosalie," he urged.

– Mr Pybus says, Rosalie said, – it is certain to make the front page, with photographs and a short editorial about the modern girl who is afraid of nothing. If you are interested, I may inform you that I have dinner with Captain Fosdyke tonight. There is a man who really is a man. A million gorillas couldn't frighten him. Good-bye, Mr Mulliner.
