Fractures (broken bones) can happen whenever there is more stress applied to a bone than it can handle. Given the mass of your average lineman these days, it’s amazing there aren’t more of them.

Some fractures can be complicated. For instance, when a fracture happens through a joint, is accompanied by dislocation of a joint, is compound (bone punctures the skin), comminuted (bony ends are fragmented), or displaced (bony ends are offset), the fracture is messier and it often requires surgery and hardware to repair.
