строить простое повествовательное предложение в утвердительной, отрицательной, вопросительной форме во всех временах в активе и пассиве;

строить побудительное предложение в утвердительной и отрицательной форме в прямой и косвенной речи;

задавать четыре типа вопросов;

правильно употреблять артикль с различными классами существительных в единственном и множественном числе;

правильно употреблять глагол «to be», модальные глаголы;

пользоваться правилами согласования времен, передавать значения одновременности, последовательности, предшествования действий;

анализировать ситуацию общения с целью выбора соответствующей грамматической единицы;

переводить с русского на английский и с английского на русский:

4

простые ситуации, содержащие монологические и диалогические высказывания в рамках изученной тематики,

адаптированные и несложные оригинальные тексты, содержащие 10– 15% незнакомой лексики в рамках пройденных грамматических тем;

-понятийного аппарата практической грамматики;

-основных грамматических явлений и закономерностей функционирования изучаемого языка;

особенностей официального, нейтрального и неофициального регистров общения.

Умения:

-проводить сравнительно-сопоставительный анализ лингвистического материала;

-употреблять определённые грамматические структуры в зависимости от ситуации общения и цели высказывания;

-владеть основными способами выражения коммуникативной и структурной связи между композиционными элементами текста;

-дифференцировать модели и структуры, характерные для разных стилей языка, устной и письменной речи;

-осуществлять сопоставительный анализ языка источника и языкаперевода, учитывать расхождения в грамматическом аспекте;

-создавать развернутые логично построенные тексты.

Навыки:

-грамотно использовать устную и письменную речь;

-использовать дискурсивные способы реализации коммуникативных целей высказывания;

-определять значение и функции языковых явлений в тексте;

-анализировать простое предложение в составе оригинальных текстов, выявлять типы связи;

-переводить с русского на английский и с английского на русский язык предложения и тексты, содержащие пройденный грамматический материал.

MODULE 1

THE NОUN

General characteristics

1.Definition. The noun is a word expressing substance in the widest sense of the word. Nouns name lifeless things (a book, a table), living things (a boy, a tiger), places (a field, London), materials (iron, oil), processes (life, discussion), states (sleep, fear), abstract notions (love, joy), qualities (kindness, courage).

2.Semantic Characteristics. Semantically all nouns fall into proper and common nouns. Proper nouns are individual names given to separate persons and things. These are: personal names (John, Byron), geographical names (New York, the Thames, the Caucasus), names of the months and the days of the week (January, Sunday), names of planets (the Earth, the Sun), names of ships, hotels, clubs, buildings, parks, streets, bridges (Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park), of institutions, organizations, magazines and newspapers (The United Nations, the Guardian). Proper nouns may change their meaning and become common nouns (a sandwich, champagne).

Common nouns are classified into: class, collective, material and abstract

nouns.

Class (concrete) nouns denote persons or things belonging to a class (a chair, a student). They are countable and have two numbers: singular and plural. They are usually used with an article.

Collective nouns denote a number or collection of similar individuals or things as a single unit. Nouns denoting a number of things collected together and regarded as a single object are used only in the singular (foliage, machinery). Some collective nouns are plural in meaning but singular in form (police, cattle, poultry, people, gentry - are). Some nouns can be both plural and singular (family, crowd, fleet, nation).

Material nouns denote material and are uncountable (iron, gold, paper, glass). They are generally used without any article. Some material nouns can turn into class nouns and then they are used with an article and in the plural (a glass of juice - glasses of juice).

Abstract nouns denote some qualities (strength, beauty), states (sleep, fear), ideas (religion, communism). As a rule, they are uncountable. But some of them are countable (an idea – ideas). Some abstract nouns can turn into class nouns and then they are used with an article and in the plural (a beauty – beauties).

3. Morphological composition. According to their morphological composition we distinguish simple, derived and compound nouns.

6

Simple nouns consist of only one root morpheme (a dog, a room). Derived nouns (derivatives) have derivative elements (suffixes or prefixes or both) (a reader, misconduct). Productive noun-forming suffixes are: age, -al, -ancy/- ency, -ing, -ment, -ness, -ion/-tion/-ation/-sion, -er, -ee, -dom, -ist, -ity, -hood (freedom, darkness, a worker). Compound nouns consist of two stems (an apple-tree, a blackbird, a father-in-law).

4.Morphological characteristics. Morphologically nouns can be characterized by the grammatical categories of number and case. Gender does not find regular morphological expression. The distinction of male, female and neuter may correspond to the lexical meaning of the noun:

masculine (names of male beings) – a boy, a man, a bachelor, an ox, a cock;

feminine (names of female beings) – a girl, a lady, a maid, a cow, a hen; neuter (names of inanimate objects) - table, house.

It may be expressed by word-formation:

-ess (actress, hostess), -ine (heroine), -ette (usherette) - feminine. It may be expressed lexically:

a woman-doctor, a he-wolf, a she-cousin.

5.Syntactical Functions of the Noun. A noun may be used in the function of almost any part of the sentence. The main functions are:

1.Subject: The ship was new.

2.Predicative: He is a student.

3.Object: I gave him a book.

4.Attribute: A dog is a man's best friend.

5.Adverbial modifier (usually as a part of a prepositional phrase): High

above the city stood the statue.

The Category of Number

The nouns that can have singular and plural forms are called countable. Not all nouns are countable.

1. The plural of the countable nouns is formed by adding -s/-es to the singular. The ending is pronounced in different ways:

[z] after voiced consonants and vowels (flowers, beds); [s] after voiceless consonants (cap, books);

[iz] after sibilants and affricates [s, z, d , t ] (noses, bridges).

2. If the noun ends in -s, -ss, -x, -sh, -ch, -tch, the plural is formed by adding -es to the singular (buses, glasses, boxes).

7

3.If the noun ends in -y preceded by a consonant, у is changed into -i before -es (a fly-flies, a lady-ladies). The plural of the proper names in -y is formed by adding -s (Mary-Marys). When the final -y is preceded by a vowel, we add –s without any changes (a boy-boys, a day-days).

4.If the noun ends in -o preceded by a consonant, the plural is formed by - es (potato-potatoes, hero-heroes);

But in borrowed words, contracted words and proper names we add only –

s:piano-pianos, solo-solos, photo-photos, Romeos, Filipinos.

5.12 nouns ending in –f/-fe change it into -v + -es: wife-wives, wolf-wolves,

life, knife, calf, half, loaf, leaf, self, shelf, sheaf, thief. But: a roof-roofs, a safesafes.

In a few cases two forms are possible: a scarfscarfs (or scarves).

Irregular Plurals

1. 7 nouns form the plural by changing the root vowel:

A man-men, a woman-women, a foot-feet, a tooth-teeth, a goose-geese, a mouse-mice, a louse-lice.

2.2 nouns have -en in the plural: an ox-oxen, a child-children.

3.In some nouns the plural form does not differ from the singular: deer,

sheep, swine, fish, trout (two deer, many fish).

4. Some words borrowed from Latin or Greek keep their Latin or Greek plural forms: phenomenon-phenomena, criterion-criteria, datum-data, crisiscrises, basis-bases, analysis-analyses, parenthesis-parentheses, stimulusstimuli, index-indices, appendix-appendices.

Plural in Compound Nouns

1.A compound noun forms the plural by adding -s to the head-word: a house-wife-house-wives, a tooth-brush- tooth-brushes.

2.Compound nouns in -full have the plural ending at the end:

handful-handfuls, spoonful-spoonfuls.

3.Compounds with the first element man-, womanhave plural in both components: men-servants, women-doctors.

4.Compounds originated from a prepositional phrase have the plural ending to the first element: fathers-in-law, men-of-war.

5.Compounds with the linking element -and- have the ending -s at the end:

gin-and-tonics.

6. Noun, formed from the verbal phrase, have -s at the end: forget-me-nots, breakdowns, pick-ups.

Invariable nouns

These are nouns which are only singular or plural.

8

1.Singular: material nouns (tea, gold): abstract (music, anger), nouns in - ics (classics, phonetics, politics); some games (billiards, bowls), the words news, advice, hair, money, knowledge, information, weather, furniture. Many uncountables combine with nouns, showing some part of material or abstract notion (a piece of chalk/advice, a slice of cheese, a bar of chocolate, an item of information, an article of furniture).

2.Plural: names of tools and articles of dress, which have two equal parts: binoculars, glasses, shorts; collective nouns: cattle, people, police; some proper nouns: the Netherlands; substantivized adjectives: the poor, the sick, the British, the Germans; some words: clothes, customs, arms, goods.

The Category of Case

Case is a grammatical category that shows the relation of a noun with other words in a sentence. The main meaning of the genitive case is that of possession. Other meanings are: social relations (John's friend), authorship (Byron's poem), measure (an hour's trip, a mile's distance).

English nouns have two cases: the common and the genitive case. Not all nouns possess this category. Nouns used in the genitive case are: nouns, denoting persons and animals (Pete's, dog's); nouns denoting time and distance (month's absence, a few minutes' silence); names of countries and nationalities (Canada's population, London's services); names of newspapers and different organizations (the Guardian's analysis, the Geographical Society's medal); names of planets (the sun's rays, the earth's life). The genitive case is marked by the apostrophe and s ('s). There are some rules for the written form:

1.add 's to singular nouns: child's [s, z, iz];

2.add 's to singular nouns ending in -s: address's [iz];

3.add 's to the plural of irregular nouns: children's [s, z];

4.add ' to the plural of nouns ending in -s/-es: girls' (not pronounced);

5.add 's to some names ending in -s: James's [iz] (rare James' [iz]);

6.add ’s to a compound noun or a phrase: mother-in-law's, Mum and Dad's.

In the sentence the noun in the genitive case usually comes before a noun it modifies (Jane's room). It is the Dependent Genitive.

However, there are some cases when the noun in the genitive case is not followed by the head noun (Our house is better than Mary's). It is the Absolute Genitive.

The Absolute Genitive is used:

1.to avoid repetition: This car is older than my father's (car);

2.after the preposition ‘of’, if there is an attribute before the noun modified by the of-phrase: an old friend of my mother's;

3.to denote places where business is conducted: the butcher's, the baker's, the grocer's, the chemist's; institutions where the genitive is usually a saint's

9

name: St. Paul's (Cathedral), St. James's (Palace); places of residence: at my uncle's, at Timothy's.
