Task 18. You and your partner are going on a three-week trekking holiday in the Himalayas. One person has had to drop out of the party at the last minute and you need to find a suitable replacement. The trek is for people of average fitness, and involves no climbing. The group will walk for six hours each day, which will mean an early start every morning. You'll share a tent at night. There will be a local guide, who speaks English, and Sherpas lo carry your equipment.

a)Before you read about the people who applied to join your expedition, decide what kind of person you are looking for. Write a list of important personal qualities.

b)Read these notes about the good and bad points of three applicants. Choose who you would most like to join the expedition. You decide whether these people are male or female.

fit and physically strong. A trainee nurse who gets on very well with other people, and is not easily offended.

Is very enthusiastic about joining the group despite lack of experience. Never complains about anything and keeps a cool head in emergencies. Can keep secrets.Has no sense of humour and is not good at relaxing.

Task 19. Discuss the following questions with your groupmates.

MG: Well, you see, after your funeral. I mean, well, your sister’s funeral. Mr. Morrison was in the Post Office here, and when I mentioned your book and that was not quite sure what to do with it, so he said to send it to London to notify them of your death and suppose then the Post Master General would know what to do. So that is what I did.
